Don't kid yourself.
Get an assault weapons ban on the ballot as a referendum and it would pass in a landslide. Every minivan-driving soccer mom would vote for it.
Universal suffrage seems a whole lot less appealing now.
IIRC, most states have laws which prohibit local governments from passing ordinances that are stricter than state law.
I’m Paul Revere on the following: newly passed GVRO/Red Flag laws now allow anyone to denounce a gun owner to police as being a danger to others. The police obtain a GVRO and knock on the owner’s door and his guns are gone.
Oversimplified? Due process followed in all cases? Google GVRO and learn. Potential for abuse is enormous.
