I have read that one of the first things Queen Elizabeth did after the coronation was to change the law so that Margaret could never become queen if Elizabeth pre-deceased her.
The Queen can’t change laws. Margaret was second in line until EII gave birth to Charles, and moved down as the Queen’s own offspring increased. Margaret remained in the line of succession until her death.
Hmmm...something tells me that there was no love lost between the sisters. That’s sad, but I guess it happens in all families.
Scroll a third of the way down the Wikipedia page on Princess Margaret and you will see that Winston Churchill and Queen Elizabeth tried to find a workable legal solution so that Margaret could, in fact, marry Townsend. Elizabeth was trying to help her sister marry Townsend. The Church of England and the Parliament were the ones opposed to the marriage to a divorced man with children. Margaret was only 22; Townsend was 16 years olderthe same age gap that scandalized the Democrats and RINOs last year when Roy Moore ran for Senate. Different times, different degree of wealth, different culture...
Pardon me; it was not Churchill, but his successor Anthony Eden, who tried to help Elizabeth remove Margaret from the line of succession so that she could marry a divorced man.
