As tensions with Trump deepen, Europe wonders if America is lost for good

BERLIN - Since Jan. 20, 2017, European leaders have managed U.S. relations with one eye on the clock, anxiously counting down the hours until President Donald Trump’s term is up and hoping the core of the Western alliance isn’t too badly damaged in the meantime.

But as Trump’s aggressive rhetoric toward America’s closest allies has evolved into hostile action this spring, a new fear has swept European capitals.

Trump may not be an aberration that can be waited out, with his successor likely to push reset after four or eight years of fraught ties. Instead, the blend of unilateralism, nationalism and protectionism Trump embodies may be the new American normal.

“It is dawning on a number of European players that Trump may not be an outlier,” said Josef Janning, head of the Berlin office of the European Council on Foreign Relations. “More and more people are seeing it as a larger change in the United States.”

Even before Trump was elected, Europeans sensed that Washington’s traditional role as guarantor of the continent’s security and stability was slipping away, and that post-World War II ties were fading along with the generations that forged them....

You need to sell your tagline “Marxism: Wonderful theory, wrong species” as a bumpersticker at Walmart.

Peace time Europe is just a hiatus between world wars. Why should we get spun up over whether we have their approval?

Huh? What's it all about?

Freedom of speech is under attack, especially for islam critics. We may never accept that. That’s why I will organize a Mohammed-cartoon contest later this year in the Dutch Parliament with the world famous cartoonist and ex-Muslim Bosch Fawstin!#freedomofspeech www.geertwilders.nl>

That’s what we always say about Europe. It’s globalist projection.

Is Europe lost for good? With the insane socialism and letting millions of savages into the country and suppressing free speech? Sweden falls first, then Britain.

European leaders should be far more concerned with preserving Europe.... It is Europe that is more in danger of being lost. As for the US and President Trump.... what has he done to upset the Europeans?

Western Europe is not nor have they been “America’s closest allies.” Our closest allies are in Eastern Europe and Israel, period. And if standing up for ourselves means we are “lost,” I hope no one ever finds us again.

Maybe the US would be more inclined to act as Guarantor if countries like Germany lived up to their obligations. Germany spends 1.2% of GDP on its defense instead of its promised 2%.

Who digs a tunnel into their own fortress? Britain!
Perhaps someone thought of explosives to seal it off.

We learned decades ago that we can’t count on Europe. We should have pulled out of Nato and brought the boys home at the end of the Cold War in 1991. The days of the Yurps being able to freeload off of Uncle Sugar need to end.

They are not our allies. They are nothing more than useless leeches with only a handful of exceptions. Its long past time we moved on. We do not need to be the world’s policeman. We need to mind our own affairs, slash the foreign aid budget, stop meddling in other countries’ affairs and change our immigration system to one based on meeting OUR needs. It is not our responsibility to clean up everybody else’s messes for them.

Screw em. We bailed them out numerous times in the last century. We sacrificed a lot of our people’s blood and treasure to do so.

Enough.

No more. They’re determined to ruin themselves with socialism and inviting in 3rd world muzzie hordes. So be it. Don’t bail them out again.

Good points.

Also, Europe has to know America is lost as a cowardly patsy. Try picking on China next time.

Won’t make much difference in a couple of years, we won’t be dealing with the current despots, we’ll be dealing with their Muslim masters .... probably good that Trump will be dealing with them.

You said it better than I could.

After how many countless gallons of American blood spilled in Europe, protecting them from THEMSELVES, it is the height of ingratitude that Europe would ever say jack $hit about anything USA.

They need to get on bended knee and thank the God that they have rejected that the USA was there to save their sorry a$$es.

We WON'T be doing it for a THIRD time.

Western Europe isn't worth one drop of US blood.

They won't like us?

Tough $hit, AMF, YOYO.
