Former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden marks five years in exile next month. And 11 days after the anniversary of his initial public surveillance disclosure, the first state will implement a law that arguably cuts the NSA off from local water and electricity.
There isn't a known NSA facility in Michigan, but the law's author says it sends a clear message with a ban on state and local officials, including law enforcement and public utilities, cooperating with federal agencies that allegedly collect personal data without legal process.
"It hangs up a sign on Michigan's door saying, 'No violation of the Fourth Amendment, look elsewhere'," said state Rep. Martin Howrylak, a Republican. "Democrats as well as Republicans would certainly stand very strong in our position on what this law means."

It’s easy to be strong and tough when there is no credible threat....
Remember when liberals thought it was bad for the government to collect private data and communications on private citizens without a warrant?
They probably still do, as long as they aren’t Donald Trump...
... or republicans, or conservatives, or anyone who ever bought a gun, or anyone who ever went inside a church, or anyone who ever voted against a local tax increase or levy, or anyone who ever voted for a republican, or third party, or ... Aw hell... anyone besides Hillary.
When Snowden first appeared in the news I regarded him as a traitor for exposing national secrets.
Five years later after seeing the extent of the Deep State and their nefarious actions, I now see him as a patriot trying to warn US.
If only the supposedly conservative Mormons of Utah would enact a similar law.
Good for you changing your view on Snowden. While I still wonder what his underlying motivations were behind his actions I’ve long supported the man because he revealed hideous crimes against our Constitution taking place protected by a wall of secrecy.
And while I am sure that most people at the NSA are good and loyal Americans there can be no question that the NSA was and is weaponized and politicized to go after people for purely political reasons.
The agency needs to be severely curtailed and forced to submit to strict oversight and not just by a rubber stamp FISA court.
Talk about a useless, feel-good pointless exercise in legislation!
Sure, pretend the gov’t agencies don’t just access the data-mining in which every major entity on the internet is involved.
Tilting at windmills like Don Quixote.
Does the NSA have any facilities in Michigan?
If so I am unaware of them.
Now if Utah would cut off power, water, sewer and road access to that gigantic friggin’ NSA Data Center out there, THEN we’d really have something!
. There isn’t a known NSA facility in Michigan,
Agreed....
