Deadly Convenience: Keyless Cars and Their Carbon Monoxide Toll
NY Times ^ | 13 May 2018 | David Jeans and Majlie De Puy Kamp

Posted on 05/13/2018 8:55:26 AM PDT by oh8eleven

On a summer morning last year, Fred Schaub drove his Toyota RAV4 into the garage attached to his Florida home and went into the house with the wireless key fob, evidently believing the car was shut off. Twenty-nine hours later, he was found dead, overcome with carbon monoxide that flooded his home while he slept.

“After 75 years of driving, my father thought that when he took the key with him when he left the car, the car would be off,” said Mr. Schaub’s son Doug.

Mr. Schaub is among more than two dozen people killed by carbon monoxide nationwide since 2006 after a keyless-ignition vehicle was inadvertently left running in a garage. Dozens of others have been injured, some left with brain damage.

“That about sums up most of the latest whizzbang crap they push. “

Yep. It was all downhill after they put in electric start and automatic transmissions.

The rfid chip doesn’t need batteries to work.

A simple fix would be if the car were set in park for let's say 30 minutes, a ping or voice sounded in the car asking you to confirm you're still in the car and want to keep the car running.

If the person is in the car, they can push a button or give a voice command and the car remains running.

If the car computer doesn't receive a response it automatically shuts off.

You can build something foolproof, but nature always provides fools for it.

I have a new Mercedes and the dash stays lit up when it’s turned off but......the details in the dashboard change. It’s obvious but you have to look at it.

What type of idiot parks a car with a keyless ignition in a garage?

I do. And I've never had a problem.

Keyless ignitions - A perfect example of just because something can be done doesn’t mean it should be done....Never been a fan.

My Mercedes does the same thing. The dashboard is still on but the display changes when you hit the off button and a Don’t forget your key message pops up. So to actually tell if the car is on or off I just have to look at the dashboard.

“The rfid chip doesn’t need batteries to work.”

Dude, the unpowered rfid has a VERY limited range. Do your research.

That happened to us once, right after we got our new Jeep with a fob. We were looking for an assigned parking spot in a garage, so we were a bit distracted to begin with. Then, we shut off the car-we THOUGHT, locked it and left it. When I went back, there were a couple of maintenance men by the car and one said “There she is!” when I walked up. I asked if I wasn’t supposed to park my car in that spot and the guy says, “NO! Yous POSTA shut it off!” LOL! I had no idea it was running, it was so quiet. I felt like an idiot.

I am a BIG fan! Love the convenience of walking up to the car, popping the ‘locked’ trunk open, opening the door and starting my car without having to dig out the keys.

I’m reminded of this short video about a guy trying to do something nice for his Wife and a keyless entry vehicle.

I can usually tell when I take my foot off the clutch!

I figure it won’t be long until it’s easy for thieves to do the same.

At least with keys it takes some effort to break into a car.

Thanks everyone for the comments, they were hysterical! Once in a while I like to post something sounding as arrogant as a Leftist saying “What type of idiot votes for Trump”. I think this met that challenge and this example is basically how Leftists look at Trump voters. I’d say it’s time we stop treating the Left as humans capable of debate and simply CRUSH THEM politically...as that’s exactly what they were about to do to us if Hillary won.

That is called remote start and I have it in my vehicle. However you can not move the vehicle without putting the key into the ignition and turning it to the on position.

““Loud pipes save lives!” Car makers, take heed!”

Now if we could only get them to learn how to operate their bikes, stop drinking and driving and speeding and stop lane splitting.

And, about 3/4 of MC to vehicle collisions are frontal where loud pipes don’t matter.
