The Last Word: Billy Joel on Self-Doubt, Trump and Finally Becoming Cool
Rolling Stone ^

Posted on 05/09/2018 4:39:05 PM PDT by dead

Critics used to give you a hard time. But it seems like in the past few years you've become cool.
Look, man, Trump is president, so all kinds of weird shit can happen.

What do you make of that?
I'm still flabbergasted. I try to stay out of politics. I am a private citizen and I have a right to believe in my own political point of view, but I try not to get up on a soapbox and tell people how to think. I've been to shows where people start haranguing the audience about what's going on politically and I'm thinking, "You know, this isn't why I came here." As a matter of fact, one of the biggest cheers of the night comes when we do "Piano Man" and I sing, "They know that it's me that they're coming to see to forget about life for a while," and the audience lets out this huge "ahhhh" and I say, "OK, yeah, don't forget that." We're more like court jesters than court philosophers.

He deliberately savaged his voice with smoking and drinking. He told kids about it in the 1980s on Nickelodeon (back when evening programming was aimed at teens).

He wanted a raspier voice.

I saw Billy Joel last year, here in Indianapolis...it was a terrific show, and I’m glad I saw him. Whatever his personal politics are, and I’m certain that he has some, he has always struck me as the type that would never shove it in anyone’s face. He’s an entertainer at heart, and knows that alienating half your audience is not good for business.

IMO “Big Shot” has to be the worst song ever recorded.

really? I think that given the context and the time in which it was written, it was quite good. Very relate-able.

“Not bad for a cat who couldn’t sing his way outta paper bag”

Sad he never sold any albums and no one ever heard of him.

Joel’s music is bland, IMHO. Plus he wrote one of the worst songs ever...We Didn’t Start the Fire.

Your post #59.

Just learning the significance of every event of item listed would be a great history lesson.

Agreed. I remember at the time it was a hit, about a school lesson. The teacher heard the students talking about the song. He then had it played and sheets handed out with the lyrics. He then sent a task for the students to take a certain number of names. They then had to write a paragraph on either one or more about the actual significance of the name.

Innovative teacher.

“As much as I hate it when they speak about their political beliefs you sometimes just gotta shrug your shoulders and say oh well.”

I feel the same way about Don Henley. I love the guy’s music - both in the Eagles and in his solo career. Saw him twice in concert in 2017 and 2016. Great shows!

But politically, he’s out to lunch. Amazingly, he didn’t get political at his last two concerts. But because of his music, I was willing to grit my teeth and bear it.
