We called this “The Jailbait Song.” After Gary Puckett strained his vocal chords on the high note (“cheating”) in 1967's “Woman, Woman,” and the song became a hit anyway, Columbia decided to give him vocal arrangements more suitable to his range. He never had to strain again.
He’s just a “meh” singer.
I never was much impressed by anything he ever did.
