Less than a third of British adults are opposed to U.S. President Donald J. Trump visiting the UK, and more back the trip than those who are against it. In an ICM poll conducted for The Guardian newspaper, people were asked simply if they supported or opposed the visit.
One third, or 33 per cent, said they supported it and 31 per cent said they were opposed to it. Another 33 per cent said they neither supported nor opposed the visit.
The poll also uncovered some interesting tribal differences, with Tories and Brexit supporters more likely to back the Trump visit than Remain voters and Labour Party supporters.
More than twice as many people who voted to stay in the European Union (EU) in 2016 were opposed to the trip than those who voted for Brexit, with 44 per cent Remainers against it compared to 18 per cent of Leavers.
Furthermore, a majority of those intending to vote Conservative, or 53 per cent, support the visit, compared to only 1 in 5 Labour voters, or 21 per cent.
Numerous polls have shown that Brits largely back President Trumps visit, including one in February that showed a plurality supporting the trip six per cent more than those who opposed.
Despite the public support, politicians and activists have been largely derogatory about the President, encouraging protests and even claiming they will be some of the largest in the UKs history.
The Speaker of the House of Commons promised to ban President Trump from Parliament and Londons Mayor Sadiq Khan has compared him to terrorists and fascists, as well as claiming he is not welcome in the capital.

Why is President Trump’s visit to the UK not a state visit with full honors?
Trump seems to be more popular abroad than people think.
Because they hate him.
I am not sure what the President needs to convince him that he is not welcome there?
Parliament doesn’t want him and have offered every insult imaginable even before he was elected. The nasty mayor of London has made it clear that President Trump will not be welcome in London and has encouraged large protests.
On the plus side the last president who Britain banned from Britain was George Washington. Our President Trump is in good company!
Please don’t go there President Trump.
Let them call the Muslims to save their country next time. So much for gratitude.
This is why: https://youtu.be/IiAbLcZspGQ
Still, he needs to be extra careful over there.
Do you trust that they will keep him safe? I don’t.
33% Brits support his visit while 67% either oppose it, or have no opinion. Not exactly a warm welcome is it?
In the spirit of multiculturalism, Trump should hold a raucous rally in Wembley Stadium, replete with Stones music, etc.
I’m as big an Anglophile as anyone on this forum, but I would love to see him skip this visit. The French have greater policy disagreements with us than do the British, but Macron was well-mannered and polite. I’d like to see Trump stay here and invite Tommy Robinson before anyone in the UK government.
Khan is an idiot. Trump will take it as a challenge and wind up eating chicken tikka in the East End with a couple hundred of his new best friends. This is a guy who brought four of Bill Clinton’s accusers to a debate. The guy knows how to throw a devastating counterpunch.
The UK lost men in Korea and now President Trump is about to end that war.
Winning some hearts and minds.
Didn’t know George Washington was banned from UK. Sore losers, the lot of them.
Maybe old John Bull isn’t dead yet and will be ready to square off with the muzzies whenever DJT shows up.
There have got to be some Brits who are thoroughly fed up with the Muslim invasion of the Isles. Problem is the police side with the latter & there are no guns nor right of self defense.
On the other hand, it also means that 66% either support it, or are at least neutral (i.e., they don’t oppose it at least, even if not supportive).
Can’t upset the muzzies.
The ones who are fed up with the invasion blame the US for causing the crisis which led to the refugee situation. They also note that we have taken in relatively few by comparison.
No matter how you slice it, we Americans are to blame for the spineless leadership in the UK.
Actually it broke down: 33 support, 31 oppose, and the rest don’t care. Not what I would call rolling out the welcome mat.
For me it is not wanting to put our President at the mercy of an idiot mayor and a moronic prime minister. I don’t want him to be in any situation that OUR media can twist and make the President look bad.
Please don’t forget the very public debate in Parliament when even the Conservative Party took really low swipes at candidate Trump before the election. They were trying to influence the voters in this country.
When have ever heard of a British Parliament debating whether or not to “ban” some murdering dictator? They save that special humiliation for the US.
Did you also know that the royal family has never made a state visit to Israel although invited many times? And yet have travelled extensively throughout the middle East? These are no friends of ours.
Maybe the Chunnel wasn’t such a good idea after all.
