I do not believe the president plans, sponsors, or organizes the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Not sure how a president could cancel it.

I do believe that you are correct, the dinner is a function of the WH Correspondents' Assn, and it's their din din. A prez could not cancel the event.

That said, the WH Correspondents' Assn certainly chooses to characterize themselves by who speaks, and says what, n'est ce pas?
