The U.S. has been a target of subversion for decades. The Soviets planted moles in education, media, and entertainment to plant propaganda and to train others to plant propaganda. What we are seeing now is the result of decades of effort.
Once upon a time, I believed that the U.S. could never fall prey to a totalitarian dictator. Then Bill Clinton was elected, and I realized that we are just as prone to calling for a Mao, Pol Pot, Hitler, Stalin, etc., as anyone. The situation has grown more dire since then. Thanks to the Soviet moles, a large number of people do not understand freedom.
I'm of a mind that the subversion is not nation against nation, but is driven by trans-national forces. sure, the use actors that can be associated with nations, but national allegiance is secondary.
Add "church' to your list of institutions. Western Civ. is ridiculously easy to subvert. It has close to ZERO pride, sense of superiority, etc.
