The coffee chain's anti-bias training is a potentially positive step. But white people need get real about the extent of racism in America.
Can black folks do anything without scrutiny?
The arrest of two black men sitting quietly in a Philadelphia Starbucks has set off a national discussion about whether there are any places or activities where race doesnt color the experience. Even something as innocuous and common as waiting at Starbucks for a friend looks different when viewed through the lens of Americas ongoing race problem.
And so well-meaning outrage aside, its time that white people in America get real about the way racism including their own reveals itself in social situations, usually off-camera.
Looking beyond Starbucks, the mistreatment and subsequent denials of our reality aren't simply frustrating. They hurt the black community in diverse and measurable ways, both psychologically and physically.
For black women in America, an inescapable atmosphere of societal and systemic racism can create a kind of toxic physiological stress, resulting in conditions including hypertension and pre-eclampsia that lead directly to higher rates of infant and maternal death.
The lived experience of millions of our citizens is actually killing black folks. But racism doesnt require a white hood and a burning cross to thrive. It doesnt even require overzealous police officers or a problematic coffee shop manager. All racism requires is people who refuse to believe that its real and therefore do nothing to stop it.

tagline update
I don’t think the police are accused of racism; Starbucks is, for calling them. Once called, the police have to do their job - in this case, deal with trespassers (the original charge, later dropped by Starbucks - not the police). That is why Starbucks is now kneeling at the altar of political correctness, not the cops.
Shhh; that is the plan agreed upon by both halves of the Republocrat Party...and it is working like a charm. Within a few decades our cities will be 100% Hispanic and Asian; already headed that way. The Hispanics projected to pass blacks in population by 2010 did so by 2000, in part due to a constant flow of reinforcements and in part due to the lowered black birthrate brought on by the 1996 welfare reform.
That's common sense when you're occupying a seat placed there for paying customers. Either their mamas didn't teach them simple manners or they ignored her.
Yesterday, I happened upon the Steve Harvey Show when an audience member asked about Starbucks coffee and he made a joke about the two guys (can you say set up?). When he's hosting Family Feud, when a black contestant has an answer that relates to violence he's constantly high fiving them and laughing that that's a 'hood answer. That tells a great deal about black culture.
So Starsucks is obligated to provide free meeting space for people or only for black peoples? I think that local NRA members should meet at Starsucks to plan local pro 2nd Amendment demonstrations. And of course not buy any of their foofy hipster coffee drinks and use the bathroom frequently.....
If we lived in a “normal” society, the ferals would be isolated and fenced off. When you look at the FBI crime stats, there sure is a lot of interracial crime, just the kind that doesn’t fit the media narrative. Go ahead and look at the states with the lowest violent crime rates, they all have one thing in common..
“Them being arrested, waaaay overboard. Escorting them out should have been sufficient.”
They refused to leave.
How would you have handled it?
.
Who are these ‘white’ people they are talking about?
Could they identify all in a group photograph?
MCDONALDS IS THE BEST
McDonald’s is America’s best kept secret. Shhh! Don’t tell.
Dining room space all day. Free wifi. Eat & drink here and there.
TACO BELL SUCKS
Taco Bell will kick you out after 15 minutes even when they have 2/3 vacancy. Taco Bell sucks. If you are not constantly stuffing your face, they boot you and nobody is in their dining room.
Never dine at Taco Bell, they are drive up only.
They treat customers like garbage, hence their dining is always empty. Management does not make the connection.
The movie Founder said it correct. McDonald’s treats customers well. Wifi good. They don’t harass you.
There may be an isolated exception, but when dining has vacancy, usually does, customers are welcome.
Not to mention they speak the ebonics language code "I'm Luv'n it"
If they refuse to comply with the police.. arrest them.
They refused to leave. Try sitting at a table in Olive Garden and dont order anything
The Starbucks *false* racism video is remarkable for just how unremarkable it is that so many black people break rules and laws and cry racism when it doesn’t work out for them.
This is an entitlement issue. Too many blacks feel entitled to special treatment because of their color. Buy something or get out applies to whitey too.
I would have just bought a small cup of coffee, how frigging hard is that?
Why should they leave, they were there to meet someone. I wait for people all the time in coffee shops...its normal.
And Starbucks are self seating establishments so your comparison is invalid.
If I wait at a coffee shop for someone I buy something. That's your obligation when you are in a restaurant/soffeeshop. Starbucks isn't a meeting place its a business.
Good for you...millions of other people wait for their friends, spouses, business partners and clients to arrive so they can enjoy their beverages together. If I call someone and offer to buy them coffee, my expectation is that they'll wait for me to arrive before ordering, and vice versa.
The point is that 'waiting for someone to arrive' is a valid reason to sit in a coffee shop without being hassled by some minimum wage worker about it. Clearly there are limitations, but the short time these two men waited is well within the acceptable parameters.
Raising another generation of spoiled brats.
