From what I have read “An Eye For An Eye...” was an improvement upon previous practices.

It is an admonishment that punishment should be proportionate. I think in only recent years was it turned into some kind of negative barbaric thing.

I have long believed that the punishment should match the crime.

I went to HS with a mass murderer who tortured his victims. His execution was way, way, way, too fast.
