Any thoughts on how this family could have done better, if they were able to retrace their steps?
After what they had been through previously...
1. Lots of firearm training & practice.
2. Drive separate vehicles and arrive at work/home at different times (even by 5 minutes to allow the 1st to get inside and be armed and on the lookout for the 2nd arrival).
Say's a lot about our society where this happens to "average" folks who simply own a local restaurant. What a tragedy.

As others have said, it’s not enough to just own a firearm. There are three other prerequisites for effective self-defense: (1) the weapon must be accessible and loaded; (2) the user must know how it works; and (3) the user must be psychologically prepared to kill all assailants without hesitation.
