The US has its own sufficient supply of rare earth elements (REE) but they have been held hostage by deep state enviromental-wackos. REE mining and milling companies will not go into the long term investments neneded if some next Administration or so saddles them with more regulations, just like it happen in the nuclear power industry.
Some of the waste from REE operations would contain low-level radioactive thorium. Almost forty years ago the Low-level Radioactive Waste Policy Act was passed to set up facilities for handling low-level radioactive waste for all 50 states. It has done little except to spend money and generate paper.

If true, I'll bet this pisses off the Chinese to no end...at least to semi-infinity.
They've been scooping up mining rights and rare-earth minerals in Africa for years now.
Trump should be working out a deal with the Japanese right now to get us out from under the thumb of the Chi-coms.
