The northern one might also have some degree of independence. Though San Francisco is in it, I think. So I think that one would still be very liberal.

The North Staters are screwed, so long as SF is part of that entity.

Why could they NOT split “vertically” (east/west) in certain areas. I would imagine that population will be a key factor no matter how they might split, can’t have one new “state” having more population than another. Could be a real mess it this pipe dream ever actually happens.

Not so much SF. They’re geographically limited and will never have more than 800-900K population. It’s the rest of the Bay Area. It’s been a while since I looked, but last time I did it was about 9M in population, rock solid rat territory. The conservative hinterland would be every bit as drowned out as they are today
