The problem with leftist myths about Syria
Al Jazeera via Syrian Human Rights Observatory ^ | 20/03/2018 | Loubna Mrie

Why are voices on the left still justifying the Syrian regime’s indiscriminate bombardment of Eastern Ghouta?

As the death toll in the Damascus' suburb of Eastern Ghouta reached nearly 700 in two weeks and continues to rise, many so-called progressive voices continue to justify the carnage.

Many are dead convinced that the regime is fighting al-Qaeda in Eastern Ghouta, which is using civilians as human shields - hence the hundreds of dead are not really the regime's fault.

A great number of leftist in the West and the East have been buying into regime propaganda for years now. From Australian academic Tim Anderson, who’s claimed that Bashar al-Assad has not been involved in mass killings of civilians and was simply demonised by the imperial West to British and US journalists Robert Fisk and Seymour Hersh who have claimed the regime did not use chemical weapons in various attacks on civilians, leftist public figures continue to believe that the Assad dictatorship is a bastion of anti-imperialism in the region and needs to be supported.

So your theory is that the Russian’s tricked Obama into starting the war in Syria so that Assad would invite them into the country and then *presto* Soviet Union?

That’s your theory?

But Russia didn’t start this fight in Syria. The USA did.

The Russians in this case are not ‘crossing paths with us’, we’re doing it to them.

Once again we have no business in Syria.

Tucker Carlson is no leftist he opposes a US war on the Syrian government for many good reasons, including that Christians will be slaughtered by the jihadist rebels

So soon you forget who took a dirt nap in Syria a few years ago while under the protection of Assad and meeting with his Generals...

Imad Mugniyeh. Same guy who tortured CIA station chief Buckley to death, blew up hundreds of US Marines, and met with bin Laden in Sudan about attacking the US.

It’s always prudent to take the opposite position of whatever Robert Fisk is peddling. He’s like a reverse bellwether...wherever he leads, head the other way.

They (the Russians) have milked all that. Our actions. Our inactions.

And as I said, even with Trump in power - Russia is acting so petulant and ridiculous. No excuses. We can’t blame our poor leaders for their behavior anymore. McCain by the way gets WAY too much credit on these boards. He is not that powerful!

Putin needs Syrias (plural) to distract Russians from the dead end he’a driving his country into...”Look! America fears us again! Love me. Love me. “

Trump is doing right. And Russia needs to think long and hard about a) their tumbling economy and b) the World Cup they plan to host c) get a serious grip on reality that they are not bringing their empire back.

They saw an opening in Syria and milked it. Not *presto* Empire! — but to them it’s a start. Like Crimea...

And in their view one of the *worst* things Trump could have tweeted is “we can help with their economy” - to them: genuine olive branch kindness is patronizing.

The end justifies the means?

Gaddafi sure thought that. We learned him, and any other dictators who think they can kill large numbers of our people without consequence. We might not be able to touch them today. But at some point, if they slip, we’ll be there to lend them a helping hand into the abyss.

Al Jazeera, owned by and mouthpiece of the rulers of Qatar, and Qatar was a major funding resource for many Islamist militia/terrorist groups in the “Syrian opposition”.

Anything they report requires independent verification.

"I count myself among a growing number of Americans who really don’t give a sh!t what Assad did or didn’t do."

All foreign policy should be dictated on the premise of, "if we do this does our nation benefit?" Unfortunately we seldom do this. As a result we had Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya etc. Our foreign policy since the beginning of the Korean War has been a disaster and has hurt my nation.

Putin is a real son of a bi-ch but he does nothing in foreign policy that does not benefit him and Russia.

Question: Why would Putin kill an ex-spy in England knowing it would cause him great grief? The spy was no longer of any consequence and he was traded to the West for some of his spies. Why would Assad use poison gas in a war he is winning knowing full well that he would be attacked by the USA, France and England if he did this.

As mentioned, Putin is a real SOB as is Assad. I do not think they did it. Neither one is stupid.
