A group of Laredo Police Department officers out serving a warrant in south Laredo on Friday morning inadvertently stumbled upon a stash house packed with 69 undocumented immigrants.

Officers were out to serve a warrant to a 20-year-old suspect. When they knocked on the door, officers heard what sounded like a stampede of people inside, according Investigator Joe E. Baeza. An officer looked through a window, saw a huge group of people, and found probable cause to enter the house.

LPD immediately called Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and by about 12:30 p.m., there were at least 30 agents from Border Patrol, Homeland Security Investigations and Texas Department of Public Safety corralling handcuffed immigrants into Border Patrol vans.

The stash house had no furniture less a couple of mattresses on the floor, no signs of access to food, and little water, Baeza said. There were only two bathrooms in the house.

Nationalities of the immigrants could not be immediately confirmed.
