More than 600 people illegally crossed into Canada through Quebec last weekend, a significant spike in the ongoing flow of migrants walking across the U.S.-Canada border.
About 150 people crossed each day. Thats triple the usual numbers of 50 to 60 migrants per day. Police were waiting on Canadian soil to arrest those crossing the border.
But unlike last year, when thousands of Haitian migrants were housed in a Montreal stadium, the new group is predominantly from Nigeria.
The crossings werent limited to the weekend. On Thursday, more than 114 migrants arrived, according to the Customs and Immigration Union. A Haitian woman named Rosemary was among those who made the journey from New York. Like many others whove crossed, she said her decision was rooted in fears of the U.S. immigration policy.
I come here because Trump wants to deport everybody to go back home, she told CTV News.
Temporary protected status for Haitians, granted following the devastating earthquake in 2010, is set to expire in 2019. The Trump administration has decided that living conditions in Haiti have improved enough to warrant ending the protection.

Maybe we should do what Mexico did. Let the hoard train come on in and walk them all the way to Canada.
“the new group is predominantly from Nigeria”
Hmmm...Didn’t a bunch of Saudis leave just prior to 9-11? Isn’t Boko Haram active in Nigeria?
The huge stadium in Montreal built for the Olympics. Now a drag on the economic life of Montreal. Housing some of the applicants, numbering 11,200 this year. The dread charge of "racism" numbing the minds of Quebec residents. They dare not risk it.
At one time during the FLQ crisis in the 1960's violence erupted. The English speaking residents were tabbed "Les maudits Anglos". The accursed English. They said their culture was threatened, by ordinary Canadians of English stock.
I do not gloat over the situation. Nobody, especially our neighbours in the United States deserve this nightmare. Nightmare it is, if one deals with the one word- logistics. How does anyone feed, clothe, house and give medical attention to these invaders? Without cost and depriving their own people.?
Canada, sorry, but you sort of asked for this...
Hi cherry
I have tried 3 times to respond to you LOL I keep hitting a button with my palm on this tablet and it appears to erase everything. I grew up in Chicago I live in Quebec and you’re exactly right. Quebec is very refugee and immigrant-friendly. But hey! Though I have access to the chief daycare! Just don’t look at your tax bill people. Basically many seniors are subsidizing young people with big families in daycare it’s really not right. Sorry for the lack of punctuation. I’m just tired of trying to type it out. :-)
What I don’t get is that if you just went up and suffered through one single winter, you’d pack up in the spring and head south. Maybe out on the western region of Canada, it wouldn’t be as bad, but to go and spend one single winter in Montreal?
Canadistan can keep them!
As much as chief daycare sounds intriguing, I meant to say cheap. LOL!
My dog is lying next to me and she’s dreaming...:)
Good night everyone. I think I will join her.
Sheesh, even the Canadian press call them illegal...and not undocumented like the American press does.
Quebec feels it’s a leader for francophone countries.
I know that some Saudi’s left JUST after 9/11, thanks to George Bush allowing members of the “royal” family to flee. Boko Haram is Nigerian based, but there are a lot of Christians there too.
Exactly. Canada is a joke.
My wife had a friend who married an NHL player. He was in Calgary at the time. One summer he signed with a team in the southern part of the US. The friend was putting away the clothes after the move.
Their three year old saw the snow suit laying on the bed. He freaked out saying I dont want to go back there!
I am going to guess that winter in Calgary might be a little cold.
You can draw a circle around Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, and the whole eastern section of the country, and expect awful harsh winters.
Then you go up to Vancouver (on the western end) and it’s a totally different landscape and climate. I just don’t see many of these migrants staying after one of these winters.
You see the same thing in Finland. Migrants show up...weather it through to spring, and start discussing moving south. I suspect Iceland has the same issue for migrants as well.
But I have noticed many more darker-skinned Quebecois each time I have visited over the years and now with the latest influx of Haitians and Nigerians and the increases in crimes of violence in Montreal, their pomposity seems to have disappeared.
Unfortunately also paid for by those that call you friends, relatives and neighbors.
