Trying to attract students to a particular field without being able to show them the benefits of that field is a waste of time. You don’t need to change the curriculum, you need to have teachers from the field that show the students its value.

The problem is, most teachers these days have useless degrees so they have no concept of what other majors are good for. Perhaps it’s different in Canada, but I doubt it.

I have an engineering degree and taugh briefly. Very briefly. I made a PowerPoint presentation to show my kids why math was so important. I had a list of all the different college majors. Well, most of them. Then we went through and ranked them according to what we thought salaries and the number of graduating job offers would be. Then I showed them what they really were, sorted in the spreadsheet. Then we went through and looked at which ones were math related. What a surprise, it was all the ones at the top!

All of a sudden, many of the kids wanted to major in those fields. I’m sure most of the other teachers have never showed them the value of studying whatever they were teaching them. Probably because the teachers had no clue.

Try that in a seventh period math class.
