EPA chief Scott Pruitt scraps Obama-era fuel efficiency rules
The Washington Times ^ | April 2, 2018 | Ben Wolfgang

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt on Monday formally scrapped a key piece of the Obama administration’s fuel-efficiency standards for cars and light-duty trucks, throwing the future of the program into doubt.

In a statement, Mr. Pruitt said the program, known as the Corporate Average Fuel Economy, or CAFE standards, fell victim to politics during the final days of the Obama administration. He said his predecessors at the EPA rushed through rules governing fuel economy for model years 2022 through 2025, and that those rules simply aren’t realistic.

“The Obama Administration’s determination was wrong,” he said. “Obama’s EPA cut the midterm evaluation process short with politically charged expediency, made assumptions about the standards that didn’t comport with reality, and set the standards too high.”

“Great! Now if we could just get the incandescent light bulbs back....”

For your enjoyment: Return of incandescent light bulbs as MIT makes them more efficient than LEDs

Researchers at MIT have shown that by surrounding the filament with a special crystal structure in the glass they can bounce back the energy which is usually lost in heat, while still allowing the light through.

They refer to the technique as ‘recycling light’ because the energy which would usually escape into the air is redirected back to the filament where it can create new light.

I'd love to know the relationship of Tier Suppliers, lobbyist and who gains. The suppliers come up with many of the fuel efficiency gizmos, other than core technologies than the manufacturers focus on aka weight, aero, and engines.

What Pruitt is getting back too IMHO is the Kelly Johnson 80/20 Rule employed on the SR-71. The last 20% performance increase is not cost effective. In some ways, I think we blew through that rule of thumb in the mid 90's with Clinton's emission regs.

No one imho is doing cost benefit analysis on any of this.

However I am still bullish that a paradigm changing series of batteries are almost here to kick off a true game changing shift in powetrains and things like quiet, smooth, torque, and low c.g. for go kart like handling will be the focus of elecrtic car purchases once range anxiety and charging times are cured.

Any chance we’ll eventually revert to the good ol’ days of being able to manufacture and use actual muscle cars? Can it ever go that far?

No Thanks. I have a couple cases of them if you want to buy them from a light weight prepper.

An auto expert named Eric Peters always has articles about how Government and EPA regs screw up the auto market, cost consumers a lot more, limit our choice, and often cause absurd results

“only legacy left for Øbama will be BLM.”

I first read that line thinking you meant “Bureau of Land Management.” They should get rid of that nazi group as well. Land grabbers is more like what they truly are.

Fitting, that Bambi would feel only Black lives mattered, instead of ALL lives matter. What a dork.

The ONLY reason many companies have chased electric vehicles is because Zero’s EPA demanded every manufacturer’s fleet meet a high MPG rating.

This rule change effectively kills that incentive.
