Oklahoma teachers walked off the job on Monday, closing schools statewide as they demanded salary rises for some of the lowest-paid educators in the United States and more funds for a school system reeling from a decade of budget cuts.
Were walking because our students deserve more, the Oklahoma Education Association, the states largest union for educators with about 40,000 members, said over the weekend.
Oklahomas Republican-controlled legislature last week approved the states first major tax increase in a quarter century to help fund pay raises for teachers, hoping to avert a strike with a $450 million revenue package.
The funding would raise by $5,000 the pay of teachers beginning their career, and provide a raise of nearly $8,000 for those with 25 years experience, lawmakers said.
That fell short of teachers demand for a $10,000 pay increase over three years for teachers and a $5,000 raise for support personnel.

You and anyone else is welcome to use this one sheet of reality.
The key is one sheet of paper and keeping it simple.
If you use it, be prepared for the education/teaching thugs to interrupt and cry when this data is shown.
Also, they will glare at you for at least a decade afterwards for using this one sheet of reality.
Until the last couple of years, our school board members have been hand puppets of the professional ‘educators’ if not actually involved personally with the $’s in the school system.
They often get crushed in meetings with outraged tax payers or parents of students not doing what is expected.
Were walking because our students deserve more,...
LMAO! The typical teacher response to wanting more money. So, if they are paid less, they teach a lesser quality program? FIRE THEM ALL!!
We send our girls to a private school. The cost (full cost) for tuition for non church members is under $5,000. If they went to public school, the “cost” to taxpayers is $10K as a floor.
And the local school district has mailers and adds saying that private schools and homeschoolers are “Stealing” money from the district.
When I was a kid, they did this at the start of every single school year. It’s for the children. /s
We knew this really left wing teacher, who became a principal, then a superintendent for hire.
She would get offers from small to medium size towns in N. California to be their superintendent.
In about 3 years, she would have hired her worthless teachers/principals to basically take over these smaller school districts.
Then, before the voters and school board members woke up, she would go to another similar size school system to repeat her vision.
She did this for about 15 years after she retired here. In this time frame she had sabotaged every thug school system she had set up. Most have never recovered.
She and her husband separated during one of these takeover stints. He said that she is afraid to go to any of those cities because of what she did to their school system.
Besides hiring her worthless thug buddies, she made a ton of money getting the school systems, she controlled, to buy new text books. Setting up new text books systems is an incredibly lucrative business for everyone but the local taxpayers.

This is really about pensions, not salaries....
If you don’t own it, they can’t tax it. If you’re going to buy a home, buy a smaller, inexpensive home. Put the money you’d’ve paid in property taxes toward your retirement. Owning a home anymore is the 21st century equivalent of indentured servitude.
When I lived there 35 or 40 years ago Empire Construction built most of their concrete highways. They are required to saw the concrete every 20 or 30 feet and that causes the bumpity, bump, bump. The highways become smooth when they have to blacktop over them.
Well, I am one to continue to paint out they only work 3/4 a year for their salary. They are free to work the other 3 months in another job like the rest of us to add to their salary.
Also, like you said, the salary is public knowledge, so they should know what it pays. If they don’t like it, move into another field not subsidized by taxpayers!
So what, legislators have to be elected. Teachers are still overpaid, even if the legislators are overpaid also.
Private business does this also. Our dept was over worked and needed help with paperwork, so they hired someone to do it.
Within two months, she was now creating even more paperwork for us to do. In other words, she was now part of the problem. It got so bad, that they hired THREE new assistants to work for her in the next year, one to create even more paper work to be done, and two others to handle it.
It even got its own new office and titles. It was now a self-sustaining fiefdom. I really understood then how the government gets so bloated, as they have unlimited resources to work with and no desire to ever cut back.
I agree with the BS admins and their high salaries.
I use a similar form to prove that illegals can NEVER hope to pay back in taxes what they get.
Just the costs to educated their kids alone, is more than any of them will pay in a lifetime.
They are expansion joints, necessary but the problem is the steel that joins the sections. Blacktop does not help, it compacts differentially so the bumps just come through.
I’m not talking about the joint bumps though. I’m talking about the whole state.
Gotta have sports. Gotta have football. Those are the priorities.
High school football and being a pom pom girl are the high points of some people’s lives.
The apartment owners pay taxes but just pass them on when they don’t get a sweetheart deal. Equalization in our county is a joke. It appears to depend more on who you are than what your house is worth. I’ve seen 3500 square foot houses appraised for less than a double wide.
I disagree on Fallin. She is firmly in the pocket of what big business there is here in the state. Oklahoma, up until last week, persistently had one of the lowest oil and gas severance taxes in the oil producing states. I’d truly like to know three significant and good things Fallin has done since being guv.
We lived in Edmond 30 years ago. It was a nice town once. Small enough that the city workers would build huge piles of leaves in the city park across from the old rock grade school and let the kids play in them at recess.
Feeling safe because you carry does not sound like a glowing recommendation for community safety standards.
I feel safer because I keep the gate locked and have at least a 400 yard clear line of fire all the way around the house but I don’t feel safe. A casino on every corner does nothing for community standards either.
Sounds like a typical independent school district in Oklahoma.
I guess even the odds eventually favor finding some competent people once in awhile.
Splain to me why each and every K-8 country school needs separate funding and a Superintendent AND a principal. You can’t. Nobody can truthfully. They are the only 6 figure jobs in some counties. Schools are the largest employer in some counties. They at least share a dietician between some of the independent school districts but why they have one I haven’t a clue.
