SESSIONS IS MOVING SHREWDLY ON THE FISA ABUSE INVESTIGATION
POwerline ^ | March 30,2018 | PAUL MIRENGOFF

Posted on 04/01/2018 6:53:27 PM PDT by Hojczyk

Moreover, Sessions was, in fact, using Justice Department lawyers with prosecutorial power in connections with potential FISA and related abuses. Since November, John Huber, the U.S. Attorney for Utah, has been on the case. Trump apparently didn’t know this, but he should have. Sometimes it’s better to talk to the Attorney General than mindlessly to blast him on Twitter.

Huber was appointed by President Obama, but his name was submitted by Senators Hatch and Lee of Utah. Thus, his selection by Sessions seems like a shrewd move. As Obama’s nominee it will be difficult for critics plausibly to paint him as anti-Democrat. But as the favorite of Hatch and Lee, Republicans should be confident that he’s not in the Democrats’ pocket. Moreover, because Huber works out of Utah, it’s unlikely that he’s connected in any way with D.C. insiders such as James Comey and Andrew McCabe.

What about the decision to use a U.S. attorney rather than appoint a special counsel? This decision also seems sound, and not just because I don’t like special counsels. The combination of the IG and the USA should be able to accomplish as much as a special counsel would — and accomplish it faster and with less fanfare.

The absence of fanfare is an advantage because it makes it more difficult for Democrats and their media partners to push the idea that anyone is being persecuted. A Justice Department investigation headed by two Obama appointees is harder to shoot at than a special counsel. And, of course, nothing prevents Sessions from appointing a special counsel if changed circumstances militate in favor of doing so.

In sum, Sessions has handled this matter well, Trump’s foolish tweets notwithstanding.

Do you lay awake at night thinking up more juvenile and dishonest ways for you to insult Sessions?

It really gets old

“Outside DC” is a total canard.

The DoJ should not be investigating itself.

Total Conflict of Interest.

What’s with all the negative vibes, man /s ;)

(hat tip demsux) .....that UTAH AG, the one Sessions appointed (and can seat a grand jury) just so happens to be in the jurisdiction where
much of the Clintons' Uranium One deal was centered. Longshot, but THAT GUY could nab even MUELLER and cancel the insurance policy.........

>> Sometimes it’s better to talk to the Attorney General than mindlessly to blast him on Twitter<<

You have this backward. It’s better for the Attorney General to talk to his boss, the President, to be sure he’s doing what is expected of him. Because he has failed to uphold his DUTY in that regard, he is fortunate that his ass hasn’t been kicked out the door instead of being chastised by the President on Twitter. He’s a cowardly POS who should have been fired the day he recused himself.

Appointing Huber defangs those who would screech about a partisan witch hunt.

He’s about as far removed from the swamp as you can get.

He won’t have to reinvent the wheel.

Makes sense to me.

Well said.

From what I’ve seen, someone from the Office of Professional Responsibility and a US Attorney are routinely assigned to review certain IG investigations because the IG lacks prosecutorial or even disciplinary power.

If the ongoing IG investigation has long gone beyond the Clinton email affair, what exactly is the announcement that the OIG will “initiate a review” of FISA-connected behavior?

https://oig.justice.gov/press/2018/2018-03-28b.pdf

Seems like a new ‘review’ just now beginning.

Huber is a life long republican Mike Lee supported. Far cry from Obama funky like many here like to say.

Sessions is a TOTAL Statist.

Selecting RosenWeasel to run the DoJ instead of himself is more than enough evidence to can him.

The writer is an idiot if he thinks Trump didn’t know. I’ll never understand why normally smart people don’t get how and why Trump uses Twitter.

Like Newt says, “the media wants a rabbit, Trump gives them a rabbit instead of letting them find their own rabbit.” And they chase it every single time.

Sessions’ letter says that Huber is conducting a review. He hasn’t been assigned to prosecute.

I’m not going to bother to quote his letter, but I think if you actually read it you’ll find that Huber was assigned to investigate, not just “conduct a review” and as a prosecutor he has the power to indict.

Nothing in your response contradicts what I said. Sessions in the letter doesn't assign a prosecution task.

I actually read the letter. Did you?

And wouldn’t any potential trial then have to be held in the same jurisdiction as the Grand Jury that issued indictments?

As opposed to DC, where the jury pool consists of 95% Democrats, many with lower IQs than Maxine Waters

>>”The DoJ should not be investigating itself”<<

I completely disagree.

Under new leadership, an investigation conducted by the same people who felt that their superiors were corrupt will do a more diligent job of uncovering the corruption than an outside prosecutor, assuming they take pride in their jobs.

I’m assuming they do, and that any investigation run by decent (and new) leadership will yield significant results.

It’s only a conflict of interest if the parties being investigated are still running the investigation. They aren’t, and they’re worried.

Apparently it’s a little known fact that Utah has no phones or computers and it is literally impossible to communicate with anyone in Washington, D.C. A well known source has told me that Huber has no idea who Comey and McCabe are. “Comey and McCabe? 1980s soft rock artists, right?” Jeff’s picked the right guy for this mission! All will soon be revealed!
