Moreover, Sessions was, in fact, using Justice Department lawyers with prosecutorial power in connections with potential FISA and related abuses. Since November, John Huber, the U.S. Attorney for Utah, has been on the case. Trump apparently didnt know this, but he should have. Sometimes its better to talk to the Attorney General than mindlessly to blast him on Twitter.
Huber was appointed by President Obama, but his name was submitted by Senators Hatch and Lee of Utah. Thus, his selection by Sessions seems like a shrewd move. As Obamas nominee it will be difficult for critics plausibly to paint him as anti-Democrat. But as the favorite of Hatch and Lee, Republicans should be confident that hes not in the Democrats pocket. Moreover, because Huber works out of Utah, its unlikely that hes connected in any way with D.C. insiders such as James Comey and Andrew McCabe.
What about the decision to use a U.S. attorney rather than appoint a special counsel? This decision also seems sound, and not just because I dont like special counsels. The combination of the IG and the USA should be able to accomplish as much as a special counsel would and accomplish it faster and with less fanfare.
The absence of fanfare is an advantage because it makes it more difficult for Democrats and their media partners to push the idea that anyone is being persecuted. A Justice Department investigation headed by two Obama appointees is harder to shoot at than a special counsel. And, of course, nothing prevents Sessions from appointing a special counsel if changed circumstances militate in favor of doing so.
In sum, Sessions has handled this matter well, Trumps foolish tweets notwithstanding.
Session is a long time State Lieyawher.
The US legal system is all about delay. He's perfect for the job.
Thanks Liz...posted before I saw your post.
Sadly, the prosecutions have to take place where the crimes were committed.
Sorry, You are dreaming. The folks who would do the “investigating” and prosecuting are openly defying Congressional subpoenas OF THEIR OWN PARTY. If they won’t produce documents they certainly won’t be producing perp walks.
Yeh, I never understood the Mittens/Lee NeverTrump stances.
Huber is the AG in Utah. You know what else was largely operating out of Utah?
And Mitt Romney. The idea that Trump’s cavalry will arrive on a Mormon horse from Utah is a fairy tale. Sorry.
ONLY the results matter.
And we have seen no results, which is the very same thing as a bad result.
Again, nothing but the results matter.
“The folks who would do the investigating and prosecuting are openly defying Congressional subpoenas OF THEIR OWN PARTY. If they wont produce documents they certainly wont be producing perp walks.”
Yup. Well said.
POTUS might just have Mueller by the short hairs.
To share information with congress is to share it with everyone from Michael Moore to Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin.
Nonsense. Had the information not been shared with Congress (as requested by Rosenstein) we would still would not know about the FISA abuses because the TRUMP DOJ has been stonewalling. How crazy is that!
It's more than quiet on the field too.
“I’m sorry, but that is simply absurd.”
Only if you take it to an absurd extreme. As a practical matter, presidents do not have much to do with most military promotions.
That said, there aren’t enough decent people in our bureaucracies to produce even a blip on the screen if they all resigned together.
Up at Huber’s level, the principle stands. Huber knows what kind of person Obama is, and he had the choice of accepting or declining the appointment.
My heart agrees with you but my head knows better. One of the problems we have today is that the government is riddled with UniParty operatives hired by Obama, Bush and Clinton. How much worse would it be if ALL the good people had resigned and NO white hats had stuck it out until Trump won the presidency? Thankfully, many good people stayed, and President Trump has spent his first year in office figuring out whom he can trust.
I’m more than tired about hearing about the secret Sessions’ Qook stuff.
Sessions basically has no more time to get some actions performed/completed before Nov, 2018.
Trump's so-called public feud with Sessions is a ruse. An intended, deliberate distraction.
I don't know but I would venture an educated guess, that Trump knows what Sessions and Huber are up to, approves of it and is giving Sessions cover from the media.
Despite the author's misplaced criticism of Trump when he talks about "Trump's foolish tweets notwithstanding", Trump is in the loop on this.
If the president didn't like what Sessions was up to, he would have fired him last year.
.
If you listen to Sessions, and see how hes dragged his feet, this isnt important or credible enough for a Special Counsel.
Seriously, if you followed the Comey/ Hillary / Lynch Fake Investigations, you know this ends up dying with an Obama Appointee in Utah.
It was sent there to die.
In this case I think most if not all of the people called will fall into one of two types. Those who still are employed by the DOJ and can be bound to secrecy. Then those who are giving testimony under some form of immunity and once again can be bound to secrecy. The people who will be prosecuted will not be called until much later if at all.
It’s a thicket in the Swamp, but the very low FIB resignation rate is so telling.
The FIB needs to be Phoenixed.
>>As a US Attorney, AG Sessions was known to be very slow and methodical which is exactly what you want for this mess.
*********************************************************
Yes, but the problem is not only are statutes of limitations expiring, but the midterm elections are coming up.
If citizens don’t see progress, many will stay home. With a Dem Congress, all his methodical work will be for naught.
>>Sadly, the prosecutions have to take place where the crimes were committed.<<
Okay, but these are federal crimes being investigated by federal prosecutors and can be adjudicated anywhere in the jurisdiction of the federal government, i.e., anywhere in the United States.
Nunes is literally the only guy inside the beltway who has stuck his neck way out for President Trump. If the man wants it, give it to him. This Rosenstein/Sessions CYA idea that we need to hide the evidence from him is ridiculous.
