Former President Jimmy Carter took a not-so-subtle jab at President Donald Trump and his supporters Friday on an episode of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS, suggesting that Americans who voted for him wanted a jerk to be president.
Does America kind of want a jerk as president? CBS host Stephen Colbert pressed the former president on the late-night talk show.
Apparently, from this recent election, yes, Carter replied. I never knew it before.
Colbert then asked Carter what he thought is the most important quality for a president.
I used to think it was to tell the truth, but Ive changed my mind lately, the former president said.
The late-night host asked Carter if he had any political ambitions to run in the 2020 election.
Is there any chance youre running in 2020 because we could use a nice guy in the Oval Office? Colbert asked.
I think theres an age limit, the 93-year-old former president jokingly replied, after which Colbert presented him with a T-shirt with the words Carter 2020: Still Constitutionally Eligible.

This from the president who owns the “misery index”.
Honestly? I WANTED a “jerk” just like Trump, a mean old PawPaw with a grin and a Gatling gun to mow down the demonic opposition. Americans have been blanded to death by fake “goodness” and “niceness”.
Remember Exodus 15:3? “The LORD is a man of war, the LORD is his name”. God has done/will do extreme things to right a ship. Carter represents a different era, where America had the luxury of societal ballast. Now we have “important” people openly flouting the Constitution on a daily basis. Evil billionaires are financing mayhem from hidden positions (including, I believe, offsetting losses of activist businesses and corps. in order to use them as a mouthpiece and deny us recourse).
From the quotations in the excerpt, I would think this was scripted. Jimmah just memorized his lines.
I remember it well. I remember sitting in long gas lines and my husband searching for gas so that our tank was always filled. I was nine months pregnant and terrified we wouldn’t have enough gas to get us to the hospital.
Worst. President. Ever!
Jimmy Carter did more damage in 4 years than Obama in 8
*spit*
You know what, sometimes it does take a “jerk”.
Funny, because both Carter and Obama strike me as haughty and thin-skinned, with Carter adding bitterness to the mix. Here we see Carter breeching decorum in typical Democrat fashion in what was no doubt a pre-planned exchange with Colbert. Trump is a gritty counterpuncher who is quick to forgive. Carter and Obama would probably brood eternally over any slight.
The ‘man’ lost his election and cried in the Oval office for 8 straight hours non stop until he fell asleep, according to my brother.
My people are still feeling the fallout! 45 years on!
Piss Off Jimmy
“Americas better days are behind her”
Jackass
Nah we had Clinton and Obama... had enough Jerks as president for a while.
If we wanted a nice guy who was inept, we would have lauded you...but we didn't.
But wait a minute, Jimmah...
Folks who knew you up close and personal said you were a real @sshole.
I guess we just want a President who is effective.
Not a dud like you.
One. Minnesota, Mondales home state.
Carter is the second worst president in America's history. Senile, old fool...as bad today as he was as POTUS. Go dig your peanuts, you peanut brain.
Bests the hellbout of a dumbass, dumbass.
Clinton was way better than Carter or Obama. Thank Lord His Wicked Witch Wife is politically DEAD.
Dumbass Jimmy don’t get it.
No, just a real man who loves America first.
I love Trump because he has all the right enemies including this ass clown. I will take a jerk over that filthy c**t Hillary any day of the week.
Because Hillary wasn't a jerk? Once again, Idiot Carter is on his own little planet.
