To: Alas Babylon!

Funny about that movie. Each time I see it, I like it a little less. What was outrageous and hilarious on first viewing became unfunny, then hateful over time, and the way he treated his family, his son especially, made for a bummer. Doubt I’ll watch it again.

Pat Conroy had a very love/hate relationship with his father. A lot of that you see in this story because it is based on real events.

Sadly, a lot of people were raised that way back then.

The story is really about his father and the author growing up back in the 50s.

I spent 22 years active duty, and I knew men like this, men who were warriors, but also fathers. Some were good fathers, others weren’t.

I’m sure in this story there were embellishments, points left out, and really, the major perspective was from the eyes of the son.

And if anyone dunked my head in the toilet, I would—oh yes I would—get revenge.
