Should the Military Build the Wall?
Townhall.com ^ | March 25, 2018 | Timothy Meads

Today, President Donald J. Trump offered a new way possible for America to build the border wall, even after the omnibus spending bill signed on Friday left many wondering if construction will ever start. His suggestion? Have the military build it.

Early Sunday morning, President Trump pointed out the fact that the border wall is a matter of national security. America therefore should simply have the Department of Defense over see the project in order to keep out drugs and enemy combatants, according to the commander in chief.

Because of the $700 & $716 Billion Dollars gotten to rebuild our Military, many jobs are created and our Military is again rich. Building a great Border Wall, with drugs (poison) and enemy combatants pouring into our Country, is all about National Defense. Build WALL through M!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 25, 2018

It is estimated that the border wall will cost roughly $18 billion dollars. The omnibus bill allotted only $1.6 billion, but President Trump says a lot can be done with that money.

Much can be done with the $1.6 Billion given to building and fixing the border wall. It is just a down payment. Work will start immediately. The rest of the money will come - and remember DACA, the Democrats abandoned you (but we will not)!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 25, 2018

President Trump's comments echo similar statements made last December when he touted border security as his first pillar of defense in a speech on National Security.

As reported by CNS News, President Trump said,

“First, we must protect the American people, the homeland and our great American way of life,” Trump said. “This strategy recognizes that we cannot secure our nation if we do not secure our borders."

"So, for the first time ever, American strategy now includes a serious plan to defend our homeland,"added Trump. "It calls for the construction of a wall on out southern border, ending chain migration and the horrible visa and lottery programs, closing loopholes that undermine enforcement, and strongly supporting our Border Patrol agents, ICE officers, and Homeland Security Personnel.”

If he actually pulls this off, he has done a miracle. The money saved in welfare fraud will off balance the Pork added by the Demo-socialists.

I think ICE should supply the labor for the walls, supervised by the military.

Most of us here have only very general
Knowledge of how the military works
Your knowledge and understanding of who does what and even small details like General Kelly’s job assignment is very enlightening. I posted the link to all your comments on the Trump Train Thread (we’ve been together through all the rallies and have become like family — sharing breakfast, news headlines etc through out the day. We also share knowledge and research— pictures , jokes , prayer concerns Well anything people who love and care about each other share . )

I’ve posted a link to your posts there and will continue to update, with your permission the excellent uplifting information you have been posting. OF course you are welcome to join us. DOlly Cali manages the ping list. Think we are from all fifty states.

NORTHCOM operates NORAD, maintaining awareness of our Aerospace Defense, as well as awareness of our Maritime border areas. It makes sense for them to monitor land borders as well.

Since NORAD is already integrated American/Canadian defense, the nature of our defense integration with Canada makes it arguable that the American/Canadian land border should be treated substantially differently from the Mexican border.

“The military should not build the wall. They are soldiers not road workers.
The TSA and DHS should supply the labor for the wall.”

That is a ridiculous statement. Armies have been constructing massive works since the dawn of warfare. Hadrian’s Wall was built mainly by soldiers of the three legions of Britain, but it was manned by the second-line auxiliary troops.

“Hadrian’s Wall, continuous Roman defensive barrier that guarded the northwestern frontier of the province of Britain from barbarian invaders. The wall extended from coast to coast across the width of northern Britain; it ran for 73 miles (118 km) from Wallsend (Segedunum) on the River Tyne in the east to Bowness on the Solway Firth in the west.”

“The lawsuit for an injunction to stop Trump from doing this has probably already been drafted”

I think that Preaident Trump can comfortable tell the Federal Courts to “pack sand” as this is clearly a constitutional executive authority.

Nothing as uncommon as common sense.
Thanks for the additional thoughts
With our Presidents military school background he has IMO a better understanding than most of us have, and for that fact most of the past few
Presidents.
He’s listens well and is eager to learn and as I said earlier today his strength is using the strengths of the people he “hires”.
Am certain all the point you made tonight are not just legitimate but your explanation will help us understand how we can best support him and his efforts
Much appreciated. ThankQ

...one more good Supreme Court pick...

That is going to be a tough nomination process though.

Kaslin,
Another great find. The other one I read this morning (East Europe time) by Kurt Schlecter(?) (about not having a "cow" over the Omnibus bill) was--
the best piece I've read in a long time.

Does that bother you? Oh, so NOT sorry. It is time conservatives have the balls, oh, sorry again, to dissent instead of bend over. RINO Republicans and the Never Trumpers I understand, but I expect more from Trump. I expect him to keep his promises and to fight to do so, not follow the lead of our GOPe folks.

All I know is that I want a Wall (a barrier that is almost impossible to scale) No Fence! No secondary fence. Now if the want to put a mine field on the Mexican side with warning in English only is ok by me! By the way when I cross the border to visit Mexico do I not need a Passport?

Yep, although not the fault of the Corps, two places I avoided on Summer weekends -- and would never even approach on a Summer holiday...

Those were the times I headed for the Berkshires -- or, at least, Sturbridge...

"The military should not build the wall. They are soldiers not road workers."

There are two kinds of combat engineers. One kind does combat and the other, construction.

Construction combat engineers can build more different kinds of highways than any civilian construction company can build--types of building that most people wouldn't imagine. They can build a highway far faster and better for far less cost.

"The TSA and DHS should supply the labor for the wall."

LOL! I think I see your point.

“Threats from the southern border can no longer be ignored. Threats from illegal alien invasion, enemy terrorist groups, Mexican criminal cartels, human trafficking and drug trade.”

Clearly a threat but more so a clear and ongoing danger. Border is our perimeter and it’s unsecured and undefended. That said, a Southern Wall will become some cross-breed between a Maginot Line and Berlin Wall. A wall is an example of a solution becoming a greater and compounded problem. It may well become known as “’Someone’s’ Folly”.
Strong diplomatic-economic action against Mexico and neighbors further south is a more realistic action.
One place to start is remittances - legal wire transfers of money. In 2017 remittances to Mexico alone totaled $26B. Whether earned off/on the books, it was money earned in the US but not saved nor reinvested here. In a somewhat lesser period, Mexico’s substantial oil export industry earned $18B.
In some variation of “doing the work that Americans won’t do”, remittances are “the US doing for Mexican’s what their government won’t”.
