President Trump is not adding Joe diGenova and Victoria Toensing to his legal team for the Russia investigation, per the New York Times. Conflicts of interest will ultimately prevent the married team from representing Trump just days after diGenova's addition was announced last week though another of Trump's lawyers, Jay Sekulow, said they will work for the president on "other legal matters."
Why it matters: Trump's personal legal team is in a state of flux after its leader, John Dowd, resigned last week. And diGenova and Toensing's conflicts come just days after GOP superstar lawyer Theodore Olson rejected an offer to join the Trump team potentially prompting Trump's tweets this morning insisting that "many lawyers and top law firms want to represent me in the Russia case."
I am not surprised in the least.
Tell us something we DON’T know.
Practically EVERY post you make, confirms your disgust in POTUS.
Calm down, folks. Why are many FReepers so quick to believe anything bad that Trump's enemies say or insinuate about him? President Trump is our man in the arena, the one whom we have entrusted to lead this fight. Trust Trump.
Obviously the post I responded to was speculating that the President was “saving” DiGenova for SC, and that would require the approval of whoever was Acting AG.
Remember sometime last year, early on in his presidency (I can't remember what the issue was), some media talking head actually came out and speculated that Trump was so stupid, that he didn't even know how to read?
I'm sure Trump was chuckling....as he was reading it....knowing his ploy to distract the media had worked.
Back to doing my laundry.
BINGO!
If they have conflicts of interest that prevent them from representing him with Mueller then the same conflicts of interest would probably keep diGenova from investigating Mueller.
Conflict of interest is what's given but I would think that they could have worked around it if Trump wanted to. I think it's more likely that Trump has met with him and there just isn't the spark there that generates trust. Trump is very discerning where people are involved.
So I’ve been told. But I do hope we get someone like him to investigate DOJ wrong-doing and bring the guilty parties to justice.
If Sessions’s mystery man investigator does it expeditiously, so much the better.
I'm not sure who else may have caught this, however this morning on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace it was very briefly mentioned that the Mueller investigation is so broad that it's extremely difficult for President Trump to find a good lawyer in D.C. that DOES NOT have a conflict of intereste with the investigation.
DiGenova is just the latest example of that.
Which got me to thinking: that's probably part of Mueller's strategy: consume all the good lawyers in D.C. create enough conflicts of interest and make it extremely difficult / impossible for President Trump to find good representation to defend himself.
Makes sense if you think about it ....
He is trying to work through his many mistakes, but it is taking its toll.
Being completely rolled on the budget was the worst. The only way this could happen was because Mulvaney completely blew it. It is the equivalent of a general on the battlefield, through incompetence, losing all his divisions. Yet he remains.
Unfortunately the first 18 months of a presidential term are the most important ones. Midterms take over then 2 years of presidential politicking.
He will be playing catch up and be on the defense.
Thanks; I had not seen that (recon re NK proceeding to plan) - it is quite reassuring! However this “news” re Joe & Victoria is rather something that was apparent when DiGenova was “announced” and, then, when Toensing was also said to “on the team” - made no sense at all, given she’s representing Campbell. Thus this curious sequence of “news” and “reports” rather suggests something else is at bay - either DiGenova is to operate informally behind the scenes, some other use is at bay, another leak op (to expose WH leakers) - or something. I love Joe & Victoria, they’ve been on the right side of anything + everything for decades, but the “news” he or they were formally on the team was more perplexing (though welcome! lol) than this “news” that they’re not. TBD ;)
This is an Axios (big libs) article based on a NYT article.
I’m going to wait for other, more rational, sources before I comment on this.

I suspect you are 100% correct.
DiGenova is very brilliant as is his wife. They are 100% constitutional conservatives and when it comes to the law are pit bull bad in the search of truth. They are a great choice for Trumps team in whatever capacity he wants to use them.
Olsen did not reject Trump’s offer, he was also conflicted out because his firm represents FusionGPS.
I’m pretty convinced we’re dealing with a troll who just doesn’t belong here.
John Bolton is a brilliant choice. However, I think many are missing a hidden message to North Korea by his choice. With Bolton advising The President, North Korea knows that Trump will go to the military option if he has no choice. North Korea fears Trump. North Korea is in paranoid fear of John Bolton. Bolton was a good choice and is a man of extreme intellect as is our president.
Trump himself was referencing this I think in a Tweet earlier to day talking about his legal team and how many lawyers were chomping at the bit to work for him.
Agreed. The first proof to me that the largesse to McCabe’s bride was predominantly a payoff to Andy, for going light on the faux Clinton email investigation, was McCabe coming to work one day sporting a shiny new Porsche 911. Andy has REALLY made some blunders.
Looks like he’s still going to use them—but for other stuff.
