Whistleblower Wylie: Facebook can 'delete you from the internet'

Chris Wylie, the whistleblower who brought to light Facebook's latest controversy, is having a hard time since the social network suspended his Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Over the weekend, the 28-year-old data scientist provided whistleblower accounts to The New York Times and the UK's Guardian and Observer newspapers about Cambridge Analytica, a consultancy he worked for that was hired by the Trump campaign. The firm allegedly harvested data from more than 50 million Facebook accounts without users' permission.

After he turned whistleblower, he was abruptly booted from Facebook's services.

"This is the power Facebook has," Wylie said Tuesday during an onstage interview at the Front Club in London. "They can delete you from the internet."

Facebook is so ingrained in our modern online experience, Wylie said, that his suspension from the social network has had a ripple effect.

"I know this sounds ridiculous," he said. "I can't use Tinder now, for example -- because you have to validate yourself with... Facebook." (One of the most popular ways to log in to Tinder is to link it to your Facebook account, however it's now possible to sign in using your phone number.)

The issue sounds trivial, but it does underscore how powerful and ubiquitous Facebook has become. It's a platform for 2 billion people to connect and chat with family and friends.

Facebook, for its part, said Wylie was suspended because he violated the company's terms of service.

They sold the patent to others. They developed product...Like Motorola and the famous “transistor radio”.

Which actually had a huge impact on my life.

I was able to listen to ball games during school hours. I think us kids were the principal consumers.

“Who even has a land line today? ‘”

Me,and three of my five middle aged kids.

If any of you has a cell phone, you can move land line numbers to your cell plan.

You can get cell phones anywhere these days; used or new, very cheap.

By moving the lines to your cell plan, you'll pay about $10/line per month; you'll save at least $40 per line per month.

I understand some places you can't get cell coverage, or need a fax line, etc.

But if you're in an area where that would work, you'll save a bunch of money.

or need a fax line

There are online services that can replace your fax line. I use MyFax ($10/mo).

I’ve had a cell phone since 1994———24 years, but I still love my landline——and it’s free,a retirement benefit.

My 3 kids that have them got them when they bought their first homes-——and just kept them while raising kids-——they all have smart phones,of course,as do the kids.

I probably didn't miss a red sox game on my transistor radio. The point is there were plenty of companies to commercialize the transistor. But nobody but government, academia and large monopoly-driven labs would do the basic research and innovation to come up with the transistor. Government funding is a bigger component nowadays and back then they were not. We have seen some pretty neat things from microsoft research like Google maps (way before Google). Facebook sponsors data science research including with the researcher who stole the data. There's no question there's more good than harm in that kind of research, and some percentage of it does not add to those companies' bottom lines. The researchers are proposing new ideas, many of which will not pan out.

You can't simply brush this all aside and say it was inevitable. Someone has to have lots of extra dollars to spend on this research. Increasingly that will be the Chinese but much of that research will be shared with the rest of the world.

“You can’t simply brush this all aside and say it was inevitable.”

I don’t.

As you said, it still goes on today. The private engine of innovation is still running hot.

But there are companies that are not close to monopoly who are doing pure research. IBM. GE. Lockheed. Cisco. And many more.
