Uproar after New Jersey high school allegedly suspends students over gun-range photo

A New Jersey high school came under fire Friday after it allegedly suspended two students over a gun photo taken during a family visit to a shooting range.

News of the unnamed students' suspension circulated through a Lacey Township Facebook group, according to NJ.com.

Amanda Buron, a Lacey resident and family friend of one of the suspended students said one of the photos shared on SnapChat featured four rifles, ammunition clips and a gun duffel with the caption "fun day at the range," NJ.com reported.

Buron said the two students received a five-day in-school suspension after the picture drew the attention of Lacey Township High School officials, who argued that it violated the school’s policy on weapons possession.

The school district shortly faced community backlash for the alleged suspension, with many calling for people to appear at the school board's next meeting on Monday to protest the decision.

The school, however, denied the students were suspended over the picture.

"Information posted on social media is incorrect,” Lacey schools Superintendent Craig Wigley told the publication last week. The officials declined to provide any additional details or point out what exactly was false.

Hard to be upset about it. It’s a government school after all - and THEY get to set the rules. If parents don’t like it, they can find other schools.

Taxpayers will be the ones paying. School admin, district won’t give a damn.

You have that exactly right. It will be taxpayer money defending their illegal actions, and it will be taxpayer money that will pay any damages they cause. That is why public school officials are quick to step right up and violate students' rights because they know that it will be no skin off their butts if they acted illegally. However, if they violate federal civil rights where they can be held personally responsible and pay damages out of their own pockets will they sit up and take notice. Been there, done that.

Remember the taxpayers vote these people in. They will fix the problem.

Taxpayers don't vote in principals or the superintendent. And, the school board members often behave like lost sheep that don't know what to do.

They vote for the school board who has leverage in who gets to serve in the superintendent’s office.

Someone needs to lose their job at the school district.

There isn’t a court in the country that should uphold this kid of rule.

ON the school grounds or at SCHOOL events-—absolutely. BUT-—OFF school grounds—with your family—or anywhere else?

NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS.

This school district can kiss their bank account goodbye if this family gets a decent lawyer. I would think lawyers are already lining up for the job.

"They will be sued and they will lose."

Sue them, then vote any of them that are occupying elective positions out of office.

Yeah, like our property taxes aren’t enough already! The only reason I don’t leave NJ is the Southwestern Cheese Steaks at Jay’s Elbow Room; the hoagies at Carmen’s, Sugar Hill and the White House and, oh, my family.

After the SHTF the district probably concocted another rationale for the detentions.

I hope their settlement with the district contains a non-retaliation clause or they can expect this to continue.

"reported to be in possession of a weapon of any type for any reason or purpose on or off school grounds."

Boy, were there some school board members asleep at the switch when this policy was drafted and reviewed.

A knife is a weapon. An axe is a weapon. A razor is a weapon. Scissors are a weapon. A baseball or softball bat is a weapon. A human fist is a weapon. A human foot is a weapon. The list of ordinary items that can be used as weapons is endless. Are all of those prohibited?

So if persons were to use any object to defend themselves, they just brandished a weapon and would be subject to this policy because they can't use a weapon for any reason or purpose.

I am just appalled at how stupid this policy is. Fourth graders should have been able to see what an overreaching monstrosity this policy is.

“Constitutional rights don’t stop at the door of any school.”

They do stop where I work. I doubt I’d get much sympathy if I badmouthed my company at work (or even outside of work), not to mention exercising my Second Amendment is out of the question.

Pretty much the same for people who dump their kids in government schools - you have to play by THEIR RULES, which is why stuff like this continues.

Yes, but once he gets in, you literally have to use dynamite to get him out.

Yes, they do. This is a common misconception (and mistake) that many parents make. Depending upon which state you're in, it can vary. Although public schools are assumed to be "public," they are their own special kind of entity that is governed by their own special set of laws. And, federal courts have long been hesitant to play in that sandbox.
