As I’m sure you’d agree, firing Mueller would have almost no effect on Trump’s base.

However...Graham is not totally wrong. Firing Mueller would give the Deep State an excuse to try to impeach Trump in the House, then convict him in the Senate. As it is now, no GOPe Congressman can jump on the impeachment train. And that’s because there is no reason to impeach Trump.

But if Trump fires Mueller, all bets are off. The Deep State will act, especially if the Democrats take the House this year. My prediction: Even if they manage to impeach Trump in the House, there are enough patriots in the Senate to acquit him in the Senate (a 2/3 vote is needed there).

It’s a calculated risk, but one Trump must take. Yes, firing Mueller will provide an excuse to start impeachment, but it will seem a hollow one because Mueller has not yet developed any specific charge against the president, and much of the public sees this as a corrupt witch hunt. That will change the moment Mueller indicts Trump for anything, even something as specious as “fraud against the United States”. No matter how silly the charge, Trump will be in a fight for his political life from that point. Better to bite the bullet now.
