Complacency that this district was so red you can just nominate any mediocre candidate and they would win because the Democrats aren’t supposed to be able to win this district. Well they didn’t believe that and nominated a very well spoken, fit good looking young marine vs. some boring mediocre GOP candidate...and we see the result. Little money would had to have been spent on this race with a better candidate...now millions were spent to what is apparently a losing effort in a ruby red district. Open seats are fair game and good candidates are needed no matter who is “supposed” to win. We’ve beaten Democrats before in blue areas by outsmarting them like this before as well (Scott Brown Massachusetts Senate race in 2010, and the replacement for Anthony Weiner after he was forced to resign in that NYC based district - one of the bluest of the blue - and GOP candidate won that special election). There were surely better candidates available in that district than Rick Saccone...but regardless, they failed to garner national interest in the race - contrast to that to the Georgia 6 race last year - Karen Handle had the full backing of everyone, the talk radio circuit nationwide had it as a focal point of discussion for weeks prior to the election, whereas this race was occasionally mentioned - at best.

Sorry, but that’s not true.

This wasn’t lost because lamb was young and saccone was old...

This district was lost because the D’s were motivated and the idiots in charge of his campaign and ALL the National Committees and Pacs ran an idiotic campaign aimed square at reliable R voters, and never outside the base.

The only message they offered was red meat for the base, that was it.. NOTHING else... Never reached out to the MAGA I and D voters who gave Trump the district by 20 points, not once.

This race was pathetic, and inexcusable... The messaging was all wrong, at every level to win with a motivated D electorate.

It was pathetic to watch, and inexcusable.

Good points.

I know many a person who claim, and intend, that they will vote for the best PERSON regardless of party. Yeah, there are many on FR who will vote for ANY republican before voting for ANY democrat, sure, but they are not the norm, and I think a weak, crappy R *should* lose if the Democrats run a strong candidate; *NO ONE* is ‘entitled’ to a victory merely on their professed party or ideology, I hate laziness, complacency and an attitude of entitlement more than I hate a ‘D’ after a person’s name; anyone who thinks they should win just because of party (or thinks that someone should win just because of party) is as much of a threat to the Republic as any mere Democrat, IMHO.
