Queer used to just mean different, or odd. I remember in Australia this chick called me queer, which I took great offense to. I told her in no uncertain terms that I was a heterosexual, and if she liked I could prove it then and there! (She was cute). She laughed and said, "No, your not a poofter, I meant just different!" In Australia, the word kept its original meaning.
Squaw's like the Latin word for Black - Niger, which became an offensive term in the English use of the word with just another g in it.
But squaw changed from the Algonquin word for girl just as the English term for a female dog - bitch - became a derisive word for a woman in the USA. Since Indians now find it offensive, it is.
