A charter bus carrying students home to Texas from a high school band trip to Disney World plunged into an Alabama ravine early Tuesday, and numerous children were being carried by helicopters to emergency rooms. According to CBS News affiliate WKRG-TV, one passenger was killed in the crash, and 12 to 20 others sustained injuries. The bus was reportedly carrying at least 52 people. "We have multiple injuries; the bus went down into a ravine," said Chris Elliott, a Baldwin County commissioner who helped out at the county emergency management center following the crash. "The fire department and officers are having to rappel down into the area to get into it."

It is a scary drive. We drove from TX to Disney when the kiddos were little and barely got through a storm in Atlanta. Water was deep and gushing down the street. On the way back, we had to head north to avoid a hurricane and on the phone (no wifi then) calling anyone to turn on their tv and direct us. Finally found a hotel that didn’t have a no vacancy sign.

When kiddo’s HS band went to Disney, we flew. More storms on the way back. The flight attendants woke the kids - why?? Landing was scary. We came in waay fast and skidded. Chalked that up to our very last Disney trip.

Wow! Channelview is right across the Houston Ship Channel -- from where I played in the Pasadena Schools bands for six years.

As a former band member, band parent and band grandparent, I'm lifting up prayers from these Texas Piney Woods for the kids, leaders, parents and first responders impacted by this tragedy...

"These were high school band members."

It was a chartered bus and schools are notorious for going for the low bid.
