The United States Navys aircraft carriers are huge ships. This isnt just for show; they need to be large to operate four squadrons of multi-role fighters plus other assorted planes, like EA-18G Growlers, E-2 Hawkeyes, and helicopters. But all of that space is useful for transporting other things, too. After all, were talking over four acres of sovereign United States territory.

Late 80’s going back to Bremerton, off the coast of Oregon in March, we took a 24 deg roll. No A/C on deck, but some of the yellow gear in the hangar broke free and went flying.

The most terrified I have ever been, was on the birthing ship while the Nimitz was in dry dock. I thought I was going to die when we got hit by a storm with straight line winds exceeding 60MPH. It was a somewhere near a 45 degree roll. I contacted my department head and he just laughed it off..
Really? I did not realize we are not a war there yet. I’m so happy we have people on this site who know these sorts of obscure and vitally important things.
