The design is a suspension bridge. The upper level anchors were undergoing a stress test (by crane) when the collapse occurred.

A 175-foot section of the overall 320-foot long bridge will be prefabricated adjacent to Southwest 8th Street on MMC and then moved into position in a single night so as to minimize traffic disruption to Southwest 8th Street.

“It is an honor to be a part of this transformative project that will not only drastically improve mobility and quality of life in the City of Sweetwater, but also serve as a model for effective 21st-century urbanism,” said City of Sweetwater Mayor Orlando Lopez.

The proposed MCM-FIGG bridge design includes a central support tower rising 108 feet above the road that will make the structure a landmark and a gateway for western Miami-Dade County. The bridge will feature:

A lighting system designed by Randy Burkett that will illuminate the bridge at night.

A 30-foot wide concrete canopy.

Enough width to allow for the comfortable passage of bikes and pedestrians as well as a space for special events and student seating.
