Prior to the 60’s, and the downward spiral of the American court system, we used to execute murderers as quickly* 3 years after their arrest, including all appeals. Not sure if the Supremes put a crimp on expedited trials and appeals, but we are now at 20 years for Death Row prisoners.
* Sacco and Vanzetti were fried 7 years after their arrest. Hickock and Smith, the murderers of the Clutter family depicted in Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood, were executed just over 5 years after their arrest. But Bruno Hauptmann, the Lindbergh baby killer, was executed just 1-1/2 years after his arrest.
