Rep. Danny Davis (D., Ill.) released a statement Thursday evening denouncing anti-Semitic Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan after J Street, a liberal Jewish group, said it was reevaluating its endorsement of him after a weak statement Monday.
A month early, The Forward reports, Davis called Farrakhan an "outstanding human being."
The congressman had also downplayed the importance of Farrakhan's anti-Semitism by saying "The world is so much bigger than Farrakhan and the Jewish question and his position on that and so forth."
After criticism from the Jewish community, Davis' statement Monday did not address his own words about "the Jewish question" and instead blamed media asking him about the controversy, although it was titled "Statement of Danny K. Davis on Anti-Semitism."
"Recently the ultra-right propaganda site The Daily Caller attempted to impugn my character," his statement began.
"History is replete with the horrific consequences of racism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, Islamophobia, male chauvinism and other forms of hatred and bigotry and discrimination," Davis wrote, saying that those who promote those views are "pursuing an agenda which I will never accept."
That didn't go far enough, which his new statement,"Statement of Danny K. Davis on Anti-Semitism (Follow Up)" attempted to fix, although it still cast blame on "attempts to question my commitment to these principles because I did not specifically single out the views and remarks of Minister Louis Farrakhan in that statement."
He then specifically condemned Farrakhan, saying "So let me be clear: I reject, condemn and oppose Minister Farrakhans views and remarks regarding the Jewish people and the Jewish religion," and then cast more blame on people who had issues with his support for Farrakhan.
"Those who have attempted to defame me either do not know me or my lifetime record or are deceitfully and deceptively attempting to use this as an opportunity to foment division and hatred between the African American and Jewish communities," he said, adding that "for my part" he will continue to seek unity.

Danny was for Farrakhan before he was agin him.....must be a Dem nuance thing....
It’s called CYA!
He meant every word of what he said. Still does. Some wordy condemnation to please his liberal supporters who otherwise ignore his slanders that aren’t as publicized means less than nothing.
Who could possibly doubt this man’s sincerity?
Lying weasel.
This blame-shifting opening of his non-apology illustrates that he has no character to impugn.
the ultra-right propaganda site The Daily Caller

Truth is abhorrent to liars.
The Ministry of Propaganda has 90% saturation of the information stream, but it’s not enough for this bozo.
The Jewish Question?
That is the type of comment expected from a 1933 - 1945 era NAZI not a twentieth Century American Member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Twice as high a percentage of African Americans (30%) are more racist and antisemitic than their white counterparts ever were in the history of this country. Mr Danny Davis knows his constituency very well indeed.
“after J Street, a liberal Jewish group, said it was reevaluating its endorsement of him after a weak statement Monday.”
J Street sets a very low bar for antisemites. If he can’t pass muster even with them, then he’s in trouble.
Democrats: “Great! He’s forgiven!”
The 'media' is the deep state.
Not hardly, there are plenty of lying weasels wearing R jerseys.
Flake, Corker, Hatch, Heller, Alexander, Graham, McCain, Murkowsky, Hoeven, Rubio, Tillis, Burr, Lankford, Gardner, Cornyn, Cochran, Collins, Sasse, Kennedy, Shelby, Ernst, Blunt, McConnell, Wicker, Portman, Isakson, Johnson, Toomey, Rounds, Thune, Gaines, Barasso and Enzi are all Bush League Republicans.
And J Street still will endorse and vote for him. Just watch.
To them, being liberal trumps being Jewish (pun not intentional)
Dems always have to hide what they really think and want to do.
I think the tide might be turning for incumbent Democrat minorities who openly support racists.
Ya can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube, Danny.
I know that he's not from Texas, but the rest is applicable ...
TEXAS SIDESTEP
RPTR1: Governor, what do you think of the crisis in the Middle East?
GOV: I was saying, just this morning at the weekly prayer breakfast in this historic capital, that it behooves both the Jews and the Arabs to settle their differences in a Christian manner.
Fellow Texans, I am proudly standing here to humbly say,
I assure you .. and I mean it ..
Now who says I dont speak out as plain as day;
And, fellow Texans, Im for progress and the flag, long may it fly.
Im a poor boy, come to greatness, so it follows that I cannot tell a lie.
RPTR2: What the hell did he say?
RPTR1: Same as usual
not a damn thing.
Oooh, I love to dance a little sidestep,
Now they see me, now they dont, Ive come and gone.
Oooh, I love to sweep around the wide step,
Cut a little swath and lead the people on.
Now, my good friends, it behooves me to be solemn and declare,
Im for goodness, and for profit,
And for living clean and saying daily prayers;
And, now, my good friends, you can sleep nights, Ill continue to stand tall.
You can trust me, for I promise, I shall keep a watchful eye upon yall.
RPTR1: Did you get any of that?
RPTR2: I hear him talking, but he dont come in.
Oooh, I love to dance a little sidestep,
Now they see me, now they dont, Ive come and gone.
And, oooh, I love to sweep around the wide step,
Cut a little swath and lead the people on.
MPT: Governor, Melvin P. Thorpe, Watchdog News. Why has the Chicken Ranch operation been so long ignored?
GOV: We should be having some acoustic problems in here.
MPT: Arent you afraid of possible pay-offs and bribes?
GOV: Melvin, Im proud of you.
MPT: Enough of this pussy-footin governor, what do you intend to do about Miss Mona and the Chicken Ranch?
Now, Miss Mona, I dont know her, though Ive heard the name, oh, yes.
But, of course, Ive no close contact,
So what she is doing, I can only guess.
And, now, Miss Mona, shes a blemish on the face of that good town.
I am taking certain steps here,
Someone somewheres gonna have to close her down.
RPTR2: Do you have any idea what that means?
RPTR1: Is that a yes or no?
RPTR3: Its a possible maybe.
Oooh, I love to dance a little sidestep,
Now they see me, now they dont, Ive come and gone.
And, oooh, I love to sweep around the wide step,
Cut a little swath and lead the people on.
