Congress is preparing assail China for protectionist policies, like a 105.4% tariff on US poultry. But anyone who thinks America is a perfect practitioner of free trade needs to wake up.
The International Trade Commission lists over 12,000 specific tariffs on imports to America. Hundreds of agricultural, textile, and manufacturing items are highly protected. So are obscure items like live foxes.
-Non-specific dairy products -- 20% tariff on imports -Most vegetables -- 20% tariff -Asparagus and sweet corn -- 21.3% tariff -Synthetic outerwear -- 28.2% tariff

Became an adult in Steel town USA just in time for the collapse, but Trump has a point about protecting work critical to US defense.

Prior to 1916 our entire government was funded completely by tariffs.
Then, we got the income taxes which fund everything but us!
“We are expecting FAIR TRADE”
Yeah. I agree and wish Trump would announce it over and over again. Finally a Pres with a brain!
Read after WW II and a bit after WW I we dropped our tariff’s to help other countries heal. Is this “no good deed should go unpunished”?
As far as the Steel Industry... the union was their demise. The stronger unions got the lower productivity went. Grew up there. Family and friends worked there. They knew the industry was going to fail. Saw it first hand.
My Grandfather worked to form the steel workers unions in the 30’s. By the late 70’s he regretted it. He went though the Bolshevik Revolution. He understood the abuse of power later in his life. Helped me to understand it earlier in my life.
I like the idea of reciprocal. You charge us 10% we charge you 10%, charge 25% we charge you 25%. That is fair trade!
Amen!
Then apply their immigration rules to anyone from X country wanting to come into America.
The Church only asks 10%
Personal question.

My Mother grew up in a shack with no running water, My Father went to work at 12 to help meet the family bills, he thought ham and lima bean C rats was delightful.
Keep giving us the opportunity to fight and we will fight.
I don’t want food from foreign countries except for what we can’t grow here.
Billy Joel - Allentown
How much is your trade deficit with your local grocer, maybe your car dealer? Your logic is flawed that somehow trade needs to equal out. I should be able to buy at a price I agree to with anyone in the world. It is none of the governments business that they think I pay to little for a product. Are you a free person or aren’t you? Just another form of welfare, raise my prices in taxing a product so it can be transferred to a friend of government. My company has a huge trade deficit with me, I sell my labor for an obscene rate and buy little of their product.
Allentown
Well we’re living here in Allentown
And they’re closing all the factories down
Out in Bethlehem they’re killing time
Filling out forms
Standing in line
Well our fathers fought the Second World War
Spent their weekends on the Jersey Shore
Met our mothers in the USO
Asked them to dance
Danced with them slow
And we’re living here in Allentown
But the restlessness was handed down
And it’s getting very hard to stay
Well we’re waiting here in Allentown
For the Pennsylvania we never found
For the promises our teachers gave
If we worked hard
If we behaved
So the graduations hang on the wall
But they never really helped us at all
No they never taught us what was real
Iron and coal
And chromium steel
And we’re waiting here in Allentown
But they’ve taken all the coal from the ground
And the union people crawled away
Every child had a pretty good shot
To get at least as far as their old man got
But something happened on the way to that place
They threw an American flag in our face
Well I’m living here in Allentown
And it’s hard to keep a good man down
But I won’t be getting up today
And it’s getting very hard to stay
And we’re living here in Allentown

Not a Billy Joel fan, but yeah, that’s the way it was...
And alcohol taxes. And Americans DRINK. Prohibition caused the politicians to need a new source of revenue, so they passed the 16th Amendment.
