Illegal immigrant from Mexico pleads guilty to using fake identity to steal $361,000 in benefits

A Mexican national has confessed to stealing the identity of an American citizen, and over the course of 37 years pocketing hundreds of thousands of dollars in government benefits.

Andres Avelino Anduaga, 66 – who hails from Tijuana, Mexico – admitted in San Diego federal court on Thursday that he assumed the fake identity of a Texas resident named Abraham Riojos in 1980 after obtaining a fraudulent birth certificate, and then successfully applied for a California driver’s license, Social Security number and passport.

From 1989 to 2016, according to the plea agreement, he received around $361,000 in benefits -- which included Medi-Cal, food stamps and Supplemental Security Income benefits.

The fake identity also enabled Anduaga – identified as an illegal immigrant and repeat felon – to go back-and-forth without restriction between Mexico and the United States, which he was alleged to have been doing multiple times per week.

”The programs that this defendant stole from – for decades – provide benefits to America’s most needy. This prosecution demonstrates the commitment of the United States Attorney’s Office to protecting the integrity of our welfare programs and punishing those who prey on the goodwill of our nation and its taxpayers,” stated U.S Attorney Adam am Riojos, now residing in Florida, who said he had no indication that his identity had deceitfully been used for so long. Authorities have not made clear how Anduaga feigned the identity, but it is believed the two did not know each other and never made contact.

Anduaga is required to pay back the full amount of government funds he fraudulently received, and faces twelve years behind bars and additional fines.

Sentencing is slated for May 29.

But they don’t. THAT is the point. They provide benefits to scammers and deadbeats.”

Seems to me he was only prosecuted because he got caught stealing the identity of a U.S. ATTORNEY.

Meanwhile, millions of identity-thieving illegals commit welfare and tax fraud and go unprosecuted because they steal the identity of someone the government couldn’t give a hoot about.

Illegal immigrant felon who stole someone else’s identity was going back and forth to Mexico multiple times per week.

I’m sure he was simply visiting friends and family, maybe his sick grandma.

Was Abraham Riojos alive in 1980?

I remember a movie, I think it was The Day of the Jackal, where a man obtains a fake ID after going to a cemetery and copying down the information on a tombstone of a child who died young, who was born about the time he was. Of course it would be easier to do nowadays with online records.

If Riojos was still alive, was he unaware of the identity theft?

“Attorney Adam am Riojos, now residing in Florida, who said he had no indication that his identity had deceitfully been used for so long. “

I am sure the IRS gets documents each year from both Adam am Riojos(s), one likely paying taxes the other scamming the system. Wouldn’t think it would be too hard to program the system to find such shenanigans, but since it is a Hispanic name, the program is set to ignore any discrepancies.

The way it was intended was to help those Americans who really need it. Genuine needy Americans. There are some out there ya know.

The problem is the people running the system have subverted the system and made fraud easy for illegal aliens, foreign nationals and other unscrupulous individuals who to take full advantage. There are not enough checks and balances at the street level in that world. Compound this by these leftist politicians who, if given a chance, will authorize all benefits be given to illegals and foreign nationals as soon as they enter. There are people wanting to propose legislation where if an illegal alien says they've been here 5 years, the state will owe them 5 years of benefits. Look at CA. This is what is choking off the system. Reduce the numbers of illegal aliens and reform this endless chain immigration and a significant amount of fraud will be eliminated.
