The idea of taking away someone’s guns for psych reasons must be clarified by very specific qualifications. Like you say, overt threats of violence (including domestic), and serious breaks with reality.

Let me try and define the serious break with reality: not based on a diagnosis like bipolar, but based on a medical report that the person was ever delusional. I might actually ban weapons from dx’es like Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia because symptoms of losing touch with reality can show up surprisingly. But there are a lot of people with a dx of bipolar or anxiety or even sociopathy who have NEVER lost touch with reality, even if sometimes their behavior is erratic.

I would hate to see people with depression or ptsd be banned from owning firearms. I would equally hate to see them forego medical care to keep their guns. It’s just not right.
