“The Civil War did not start over slavery.”
Ho, boy. I’ll just warn you that many here have accepted into their hearts the gospel of rewritten leftard history on this issue, and fully believe that the war was about slavery, only slavery, and nothing but slavery.
Slavery was an indirect cause, an occasion of moral compromise.
No it was more than just slavery.
But can you see the impossibility of living next to a country where certain people aren’t even viewed as people, but expensive cattle? And in the country right next to them these same people are free peoples?
There were already raids from those states into the nearby states to take people back with them as slaves. No reason to think this would stop after secesion and a new nation of states was formed as they were doing it before secession.
There can be good reasons for secession. Wanting the right to keep certain people as property isn’t a good one.
So the southerners who rebelled - and proudly said it was over slavery - were “leftards”?
Yes, the truth is the country was divided on many issues just as it is now. More than anything there was a cultural divide which there is right now. If anything like the Civil War happens again I am sure one issue will be chosen as the cause and the many other issues will be forgotten.
Saying the Civil War was only about slavery fits an agenda but is not accurate.
