One reason I think we are pretty far from any type of sustained civil unrest is that the poorest people are now the most likely to be obese. That’s something that has never happened before. It’s hard to imagine a civil war or uprising when the poorest are the fattest.

Exactly. Get some of these kids away from mommy and daddy and the XBox for a while, and they’ll be fine. That’s what basic is for.

Then ones who don’t have it in them won’t make it, and that’s also what basic is for.

Same with the kids with criminal records or failed drug tests. Unless it’s a pretty serious felony conviction or unless the recruit is a serious addict, most of them have a good chance of making it.

I don’t care who shows up at basic. I care who reports to his first unit.
