Trump tiptoes toward possible fight with NRA
The Hill ^ | February 22, 2018 | JONATHAN EASLEY AND LYDIA WHEELER

On Thursday morning, Trump tweeted support for background checks, new age limits on some gun purchases and the end of the the sale of bump stocks.

I will be strongly pushing Comprehensive Background Checks with an emphasis on Mental Health. Raise age to 21 and end sale of Bump Stocks! Congress is in a mood to finally do something on this issue - I hope!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 22, 2018

“Legislative proposals that prevent law-abiding adults aged 18-20 years old from acquiring rifles and shotguns effectively prohibits them for purchasing any firearm, thus depriving them of their constitutional right to self-protection,” NRA spokeswoman Jennifer Baker said.

“We need serious proposals to prevent violent criminals and the dangerously mentally ill from acquiring firearms. Passing a law that makes it illegal for a 20-year-old to purchase a shotgun for hunting or an adult single mother from purchasing the most effective self-defense rifle on the market punishes law-abiding citizens for the evil acts of criminals.”

The GOP will lose both House and Senate this fall and Trump will be impeached if they push through gun control or amnesty legislation.

4D chess becomes “read my lips, no new taxes.”

Mention of a warning about a real and serious concern.

NO PURPOSE whatsoever. Parkland had nothing to do with guns. That much is clear at this hour, and should dominate conservative/GOP discourse this weekend: the FBI, Sheriff and Broward Schools blew it. Period. NO national gun laws should be changed as a result. The brainwashed kids must be ignored, sidelined and scolded as ignorant ruses for anti-gun extremists. Trump MUST hold firm and wait for the turning of the tide.

I refuse to panic. It solves nothing.

You’re absolutely right. Parkland and the TX church shootings were a result of govt. nonfeasance. The gun-grabbers dance in the blood of the innocents hoping to advance their agenda.

I don’t call it “The (s)Hill” for nothing. The rag desires to drive a wedge between Trump and his growing support.

There’s no “panic.” It’s our duty to contact our legislators and further support our Second Amendment organizations to oppose the legislation about age. We won’t allow ourselves to be divided from more young voters by a bipartisan political/regulator faction of government funded, aging hippies ruling from HOAs in commie districts. ;-)

It’s time to push back for the more conservative voters among young people. They may not be in the affluenza demographic that perpetrated mass murders, but they do exist.

Spot on! I thought the same thing. A common tactic by the Left: Divide and conquer.

You are right about The Hill.

They are nothing but agitators.

At one time I was encouraged that there was a new news outfit that would tell the truth, but they are nothing but equal opportunity “community organizers” disguised as a news source.

Well said and true!

"Trump MUST hold firm and wait for the turning of the tide."

Well, we've seen what the President said. Let's be ready either way and not be surprised by anything. It won't hurt to contact our members of Congress to oppose gun control and to support our Second Amendment organizations. If needed later on, we can do it again...and again.

Truth is that crimes related to legal gun possession are vanishingly rare.

The laws on the books are adequate and the system generally works if it is functioning properly

In the wake of the tragedy in Broward the temptation and pressure to “ do something “ is overwhelming but I'll advised

Our current crises exposes serious systemic incompetence, rot and corruption in our governance and law enforcement systems

The fact that most all of the mass casualty attacks in the last decade follow a similar pattern.

All of the perpetrators were previously on the radar screens of law enforcement as potential violent perpetrators or terrorists.

Despite prior law enforcement knowledge of the attackers desire a combination of willful inaction, political correctness and incompetence combine to block action being taken prevent their attacks .

The Broward shooting is a symptom of much larger problems in law enforcement, culture and the current state of our society in general .

Guns are not the problem and gun control will not solve the problem.

As tragic as the recent shooting spree was, the damage inflicted by the evil perpetrator could have been much worse if he used other tools than a gun for his rampage - as is demonstrated by recent terror attacks here and abroad

Trump needs to shift the national discussion to the reality that gun free zones do not work. And also admit that even in one protected by police, they do not work. Eliminate them! If you legally have a gun, you can carry it, whether to church, to school, wherever. I'm fine with restricting them in court, on planes, etc. but keep that restriction narrow and meaningful WHERE there are real armed security to replace your need for protection.

As we see with the Florida school gun free zone, the cop on-site hid during the shooting and after, allowing the murder to kill 17 and then leave! The police, they were getting a 20-minute delayed video feed. Wow, that was effective.

I understand. So The Hill is a bad source. I believe you. I’m only saying that voters should contact legislators and support Second Amendment organizations. President Trump is a great president so far, even though he’s from New York: The Foreigner State. There shouldn’t be any “wedge” or division at this point in time. All cool and calm. As for what will happen next, we’ll see.

How many of you agree with that? Quite a few other FReepers in the northeast have stated support for barring people 18-20 years of age from possessing long guns, lately. We've had some fairly heated and lengthy arguments over it in some threads.

As a matter of fact, quite a few FReepers have stated support for making it illegal for people 18-20 years of age to buy rifles, including those in our military forces. I suspect any such bill would bar them from possessing so-called long guns in general.
