The sheriff’s deputy who failed to engage the shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School “believed he did a good job” because he called in the location of the massacre and gave a description of the shooter, a top union official said Thursday.
School resource officer Scot Peterson, who resigned in disgrace from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, was “distraught” about shooting that killed 17 people — but believed he did his duty, according to the president of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputies Association.
“He believed he did a good job calling in the location, setting up the perimeter and calling in the description (of Cruz),” said the union official, Jim Bell.

While I agree with much of your take and not condemn the Deputy until we have the facts, still, he heard the crack of the weapon repeatedly.
We're talking about children here, and even with my lack of combat experience I would have moved in under "duck and cover" if only the slightest chance to distract him until backup arrived. I would have committed suicide as you call it.
Again, we don't know, but as a trained LEO I think he should have headed towards the gunshots. Also, I've read and seen one or two move on a house with a reported shooter many times with just their side arms. I expect First Responders to move forward to the threat and try their best to get a bead on the perp. That's what combat Marines, Army, SEALs, Delta do.
After the Deputy called the threat in, he should have moved in. He knew the school grounds and could hear the sound of the traveling crack of the rifle from place to place. Forget crossfire, according to reports the shooter was on the move which could have given the Cop time to re-position. This was not a hostage situation in a bank where protocol requires one or more patrol type officers to wait for SWAT. These were children being mowed down in different areas for gawd sakes. We'll see how it pans out from the witnesses.

3158 students attended the school and there was one deputy on guard. Now there are 6 cops guarding that former deputy's home. Okay time to do some math. 3158 x 6 = 18,948. So does our society consider a chicken cop to be 18,948 times more valuable than a student attending school?
Then why in hell was he armed? What’s his job. If that’s what we expect from cops than we can’t ever expect to be protected. THIS IS SO LAME.
The man is a coward. When a 15 year old and a coach lay down their lives to protect others from being shot what do you say? Secure the perimeter.

What he needed to do was to give an update of his location while moving to engage the shooter so that other officers, who were watching a 20 minute delay, could know where the activity was occurring in real time.”
Bingo! And, while DoughtyOne says that suicide was not a job requirement for the resources officer, taking risk WAS. This resources officer had a professional and moral requirement —and the Sheriff’s office a training requirement— to have pre-thought plans for situations like this, and to have years ago made a decision to ENGAGE NOW in a rage-shooting situation, and to head toward the gun fire. This officer had tremendous advantages on his side in a situation like this if he’d been trained well and pre-planned to exercise those advantages.
He was thee first responder. He is an officer trained to engage.
The guy is a coward. If he didn’t’t resign he would have been stripped of his duties as a officer.
You are too stupid it’s not even funny. You watch too many movies. By your logic it’s O.K. to have this carnage because responding would cause more deaths. You cannot name on scenario where this is true.
This is 2018. We don’t talk about cowardice or heroism any longer.
The debate is what should be done when there is an active shooter. After Columbine some Departments put out policies that in an active shooter situation, officers must engage the shooter. As FReeper the Original Dan Vik points out, while no one expects officers to commit suicide, they are expected to take risks if the needs of the incident require it. An officer needs to try to engage the shooter because the shooter is killing people who can NOT engage him. They are not ARMED.

He was called upon to be Matt Dillon, but all he could manage was Chester. I don’t think that’s a disgrace, necessarily, but a “good job” it most certainly was not. In addition to resigning, he ought to get out of Dodge for his own sake. The parents and kids will never let him live this down.

In my department we were trainedd to engage in an active shooter situation even if you are alone. We don’t wait for back up.
I thought I saw something indicating the shooter had texted people he was staying with and the ‘father’ alerted authorities (who may have already contacted him).
If 0bama were president, perhaps he would have gotten a medal for “courageous restraint.”

BOTTOM LINE:
He had started with Broward Sheriff in 1986 so was eligible for a nice juicy retirement package. No way was he going to blow it by getting shot and hurt. That’s for the rookies!
This x100. I could possibly cut the guy some slack if he was a mall cop earning $11/hour. But this guy ate generously from the public trough under the guise that he would protect and serve. His handsome pay in comparison to the mall cop’s meager remuneration reflected the additional training he received and the risk he was expected to confront in undertaking his protect/serve responsibilities. In spite of those who somehow find grounds to defend this man’s inaction, his failure has rightly earned him the badge of coward when he could have risen up to be a hero - like he was trained and paid to be. I pray that the deserved harsh criticism he receives serves to prevent other men or women of equal character from joining law enforcement. Rather, they can rise to the level of their abilities and obtain employment at their local mall.
