This is an overreaction. School kids should not see officers wondering around in a school with military style weapons.

The point of having armed security is mostly deterrence, so the bad guys know schools are not unarmed soft targets. You don't have to have SWAT in there to accomplish that.

It might get more discreet in future. It seems like a good immediate move. “Don’t worry about shooters — we got you visibly covered.” There is a time for everything.

"School kids should not see officers wondering around in a school with military style weapons."

Tanker-by all means discuss this issue but please don't use the gun grabbers terms.

Namely, define "military style weapon".

I was stationed in Berlin during the Gulf War. MP's followed the school buses in Jeeps with mounted M2. Kids thought it was "cool".

I think it's great to do this. Snowflakes need to learn that guns aren't going to just open fire on their own.
