Teacher’s Brilliant Strategy to Stop Future School Shootings—It’s Not about Guns
Reader's Digest online ^ | Undated-- retrieved online 2/17/18 | Glennon Doyle Melton

Here's how one schoolteacher takes time each week to look out for the lonely...

Every Friday afternoon, she asks her students to take out a piece of paper and write down the names of four children with whom they’d like to sit the following week. The children know that these requests may or may not be honored. She also asks the students to nominate one student who they believe has been an
exceptional classroom citizen that week. All ballots are privately submitted to her.

And every single Friday afternoon, after the students go home, she takes out those slips of paper, places them in front of her, and studies them.
She looks for patterns.

Who is not getting requested by anyone else?

Who can’t think of anyone to
request?

Who never gets noticed enough
to be nominated?

Who had a million friends last week and none this week?

You see, Chase’s teacher is not looking for a new seating chart or “exceptional citizens.” Chase’s teacher is looking for lonely children....

There is one and only one thing that will stop these school shootings. That is to arm the teachers. Only the liberals oppose this step. This is the only thing that will work and you will notice that the media is not putting it forward. No other gun law in creation will stop them now. This is all that will work. That’s reality!

Sigh.

The intrusiveness was a bare minimum etc. The teacher showed a lot of wisdom and compassion--probably quite effective, as well. I only want to cheer her on and encourage others to try similar stuff.

This was the furthest thing from Draconian social engineering carp.

you can't order teachers to do something like that...it would completely be a failure unless they really bought into it....of course, it would have to be a pay raise for all the extra work of caring about children.

in a sensible world, we could depend that people that went into the teaching profession actually loved and cared about children....

Perhaps you misconstrued the words used in the article. Your assessment sounds extremely off-the-wall.

Her methodology was not that different from sociological strategies to determine connections in groups and/or between individuals in a neighborhood, culture etc.

It was simple, clear, straight-forward and confidential. She used it compassionately to help individuals.

It's sad that you seem to have trouble wrapping your mind around all she was demonstrating. That does not take away from the quality of her deeds. It only demonstrates your lack of wisdom in assessing her strategy and deeds.

Yeah, letting elementary school students sit by whom they want will stop shootings. More feel-good liberal claptrap. From what I’ve read, the common denominator is psychotropic drugs.

Class lessons do not teach values all that well.

Values are learned in RELATIONSHIP, CONNECTION individual to individual.

And by 6 years old, most of the values are already well on the way to being deep seated.

HOWEVER, a LOT of research has indicated that for kids who come from horrible backgrounds, ONE teacher showing some kindness and interest totally changed that child's destiny from horror and prison to sometimes great success.

More shockingly, sometimes it was ONE teacher showing one bit of kindness one day in the whole year that did the trick. Let that sink in.

I didn't say it would. Nobody said it would.

Well I'm glad you've got it all nailed down, Doc.

FYI

Statistically, introverts, as a group (there's always exceptions) score significantly lower on:

--satisfaction in marriage
--satisfaction in work
--make less money
--I forget the 4th thing ... might be satisfaction with life in general.

Or perhaps you have no significant clue about nuance and interpreting and understanding nuance.

Multiple factors contribute to such problems. Yes, the drugs are ONE factor.

And we had the small church mass murders.

I graduated high school in 70. My school had split shifts because we had over 3000 students. Never had a shooting and no school cops.
