They will count every shooting within a school gun-free zone, regardless of whether or not it is actually on school property or has anything to do with anyone from the school.

The first one of the year wasn't even a school - it was a closed, former school (East Olive Elementary School in St. Johns, Mich.) - but now it's a "school shooting".
