The FBI and local cops must act within the law. They have to present a criminal case with probable cause. Is the mere act of saying something offensive a criminal act? SCOTUS says it is not.

What are they supposed to do? I am upset about current events and do not feel like mounting a defense for them, but seriously, how do they fix this? Put him under constant surveillance?

They are damned if they do and damned if they don’t and will be criticized no matter what they do. Statistically, they can interview a 1000 kids like this and maybe 1 of them would act on their potential threat. Do they incarcerate the other 999 and if so, for what?

I am sick about what happened like everyone, but there are no easy answers to this and it sounds like this kid was a broken egg from birth based on what I have read.

You take the cases where the guy really DID shoot and use that to determine which ones to take seriously.

And you start incarcerating people for threats.

Put him under constant surveillance?

First, who could oppose making security at our schools extremely modern, manned, and hardened? If we can make a military encampment in Afghan safe, we can make a school safe. WHY has this not already been done???

Next, we need to reverse legislation that makes committal to an insane asylum a near impossible thing. It was common in my youth, but then the libs decided that wackos on the streetcorners was a good thing.

Finally, there needs to be an actual vetting system for threats. Call it threat "triage". If a call like this one comes in, then it MUST go through vetting. Period. And that person must be in danger of being committed.

What are they (FBI) supposed to do?

That begs the question, since they had the shooter suspects name and his threat far in advance of this horrific event, what specifically did they do? What did the local cops do? What did the students and teachers do? They all knew far in advance or suspected this guy was a potential time bomb.

What do the authorities say every time this happens? “If ya see or hear something, report it! Regardless of how ya chop this up, the FBI looks incredibly bad here, if that’s even possible.
