When I first learned about and studied the Civil War, it was hard to understand how Americans could wind up being so incapable of finding common ground that they started killing each other. What I’m seeing now is making it clear how that can happen. We are now clearly living in a highly divided America, and the lighter fluid being squirted on the flame of division is the media and the entertainment industry.

John Batchelor has several interviews with Michael Vlahos of the Naval War College on the histories of various civil wars and whether or not we are right now in the lead up to one.
Vlahos is a rather squishy conservative, but these are interesting. He posits that when both sides are uncompromising about their own moral superiority, it opens the way to view the other side as immoral, and therefore must be subjugated.
