I’m glad I went to the Hadley school instead of the Stanley school. For those not familiar with the place, Swampscott is a beautiful seaside community between Lynn, Mass and Marblehead, Mass. It is primarily upper middle class and its demographics include mostly Jews and Caltholics. When I lived there, the minorities were white protestants. I don’t recall ever seeing a brown or black person.

I spent three years of my youth living directly across from Fisherman’s beach in Swampscott.

As the principal’s identity transitions physically, he offered a trio of ways for parents to relay the changes to their children:
• “Thise are many different ways boys and girls express themselves. It is important that we accept everyone as they are.”
• “Principal Daniels may look and sound different, but inside, Principal Daniels is the same, caring person.”
• “This doesn’t change the fact that Stanley School is a great place to be and learn.”
“Principal Daniels has shared with us the intensely personal decision to identify as transgender,” wrote Swampscott Superintendent Pamela Angelakis in a letter to the Swampscott Community. “This will mark the beginning of an important community dialogue on the issue.”
With that said, Angelakis noted the Swampscott Public Schools will be providing opportunities for education and conversation about this topic in the near future.
She applaued Daniels and stated her admiration for the principal’s “courage, honesty and transparency”
